Clear Lake 73 -Clear Springs 52

Posted by Donald Wilkerson on Jan 17 2010 at 04:00PM PST

When Clear Lake rebounds well the chances of a win greatly increase. Playing solid team basketball, Lake shot well, worked hard on defense, worked well together, and REBOUNDED. As a result the Falcons soundly trounced a Clear Springs team that was picked by some to win the district. This was a huge win that showcased what the Falcons can do when they make up their minds.

Hardly anyone this season expected Lake's young guards to be as good as they have become. Both Rob Lewis and Paris Clayton have been performing above the expectations of many (as have the defensive efforts of Kris Henderson). Although youth at the guard position has been noticeable at times this season, in this contest both Rob and Paris provided outstanding offensive efforts and combined solid defensive efforts with superlative defensive contributions from Randall Hollimon, Blake Gregorcyk,  and Brick Pomeroy to cause the Chargers  grief, consternation, and the embarassment of a 21 point loss.

After a close first half (5 ties and 5 lead changes in the half), Lake blew it open in the third quarter and outscored Springs 23-10. Jacob Horton led his team with 18 points by shooting 5 of 8 from the field in the second half. Clear Springs' hoss, Anthony Horton (signed with Campbell University), was never a force in this game. If he plays when Springs comes to Krueger Field House, expect him to be  more of a force in the contest.

Even though Lake's defense and rebounding are still weak points worthy of continued focus, now it is obvious to most fans just what this team can do. The challenge to this team is to play consistently at the level demonstrated in tonight's contest. To sustain that level of play on the high school level is certainly a formidable undertaking. But if that happens Clear Lake will surprise many and win the District 24-5A championship.

Note: only 4 Lake points in the second half came from free throws.
