Clear Lake 49 - Milby 46 - START of 2010-11 SEASON
Clear Lake 49 - Milby 46
Clear Lake has a significant number of good outside shooters this season but it was not evident in the season opener against Milby. Despite very dismal shooting from the field (34.7%) and from the free throw line (57.1%), the Falcons were able to cling to a narrow victory over the Milby Buffalos thanks to pressure defense throughout the contest and noteworthy performances by Connor Ruta, Gabe Lavespere, Eddie Cooper, and Connor Train.
After witnessing the impressive victories by the Freshman A team (81-18) and the JV (72-28), the difference in talent on the Varsity squads would lead one to also expect an easier victory for the Falcons. Instead, it was a close contest throughout the game.
In both the Freshman A and JV victories both Lake teams were not only noticeably more talented, they were significantly better prepared than their opponents to start the season. Based on the Varsity's lackluster performance it would be easy to conclude that they were not well prepared but that would be a mistake. They were better prepared than they demonstrated but it was not evident by their performance. Although there is certainly much needed improvement, expect to see a much better showing in the games to come.
Milby hit 5 of 7 from three point land in the first half and then shot only 2 treys in the second half thanks to some good defense from the Falcons.
Lake had two players foul out and one technical foul. Of the 8 times Lake shot two consecutive free throws, 6 times there were misses.
Some coaches believe there is no such thing as an ugly win but this one qualified.
Footnote: This season's Falcons Home uniforms have been ordered but have not yet arrived so last year's uniforms were worn. Consequently, the numbers provided by the program were incorrect.
