Announcement
Clear Springs 74 - Clear Lake 70
Due to the weather the Friday games were postponed to Saturday. Because there were wrestling matches scheduled in the Field House the basketball games were played in the old Main gym.
It was almost surreal to watch a varsity game in the old main gym and for awhile it appeared fans would witness another Clear Lake varsity miracle where Lake prevailed over a formidable opponent in a spectacular comeback in front of a packed house (the house was not packed but there was a good, active crowd in the old gym.) For 33 years in the old gym we watched Lake come from behind many times to triumph over some very worthy adversaries. This game definitely had some moments that got the old diehard Lake fans blood to pumping.
Earlier in the season Clear Springs had been ranked in the top ten in the region and in the top 25 in the state for awhile so Lake was the definite underdog. But the Falcons came to play and were undaunted. In the earlier games this evening all the other Lake teams had defeated their Springs opponents so the stage was set for a varsity upset as well.
It was a good close ball game with the game tied 5 times and the lead changing 9 times. There were a boatload of fouls called in this game and many committed from both sides were not called.
Clear Lake has averaged shooting 20 free throws per game this season and they shot 30 in this game. 30 free throws in a game is a lot for one team to shoot. The Falcons hit a respectable 70% (21 of 30) with sophomore Alden Miles nailing all 7 of his (5 down the stretch in the fourth quarter to tie the game in the last minute).
Clear Springs shot 54 free throws!! My guess is that is a record for the number of free throws shot in a Lake varsity game but it is only a guess. 54! Springs garnered 32 points off free throws (43% of their points). Fortunately they only hit 59% of their free throws or it would have been ugly.
Lake has allowed more than 10 offensive rebounds only a few times this season and has allowed more than 15 only once (18, Dobie on 12-21-10). 15 is a lot but 22 offensive rebounds is inconceivable from a team with the talent Clear Lake has. It's not like we were going up against an athletic 6'10" player. Springs has some 6'6" jumpers but no giants. Most of Springs' offensive rebounds resulted in points so it is a wonder that the game was as close as it was.
The Falcons played a hard fought, valiant ball game. Too many unforced errors, allowance of a ridiculous number of their opponents offensive rebounds (22) (geez!) i.e. poor defense in the paint (block out? what's that?), and poor shooting from the field were the main reasons for the defeat.
Clear Lake played some awesome defense at times though. The boys worked their butts off and played hard but were just too inconsistent.
***More to come on the final minutes of the game if time permits and the Super Bowl gets boring. Stay tuned***.
