Overview of ClearLakeFalconhoops Invitational Team Camps

Posted by Donald Wilkerson on Apr 07 2014 at 05:00PM PDT

Since 2001, weekend Falconhoops Team Camps have been attended in June each year by players who are expected to play Varsity or JV basketball at Clear Lake High School next season. These camps are by invitation only. Participants are chosen by the Camp Team Coach not the school coaches. The school coaches do encourage participation in these Falconhoops camps and sometimes attend as spectators to watch the boys in game situations. Invitations usually go out in April. Since 2001 only five invited varsity players have not participated in one of these camps.

The number of players invited to these camps might be more or less than the number of players ultimately on the school's team. Clear Lake High School Varsity and JV team rosters are not determined for months after these camps. Invitation to a camp does not assure a player will play Varsity or JV ball next season or which team a player might be on.

College camps attended are mostly a lot of basketball games with no more than 2 hours of instructional sessions from the college coaching staff. Shootouts are tournaments with no instructional sessions provided by the Camp staff.

For out of town camps, transportation, housing, most meals, uniform jerseys, equipment, and adult supervision/coaching are provided.  For out of town JV shootout camps, cost of meals is shared. Late night pizza is provided one night for all out of town camps when the boys play well, behave and observe curfew.

A fee is charged for each Camp. If the fee charged exceeds actual expenses, any overage will be donated to the Clear Lake Boys basketball program.  This has only happened once in the last 14 years.

For out of town Varsity Camps the boys stay in college housing and eat most meals in the college dining halls as they get a  weekend glimpse of college dorm life while having fun playing a lot of basketball.

For out of town JV Camps the boys stay in a hotel and eat out (usually at their own expense). One restaurant meal (usually Cheddars) for the JV is provided when the schedule allows.

Relatives and friends are encouraged to attend the camps as spectators. Camp communication is almost entirely via email.

Anticipated Costs of 2018 Camps (per player): (not all camps are attended each summer)

JV Bryan-College Station Camp (GASO) - $290

Varsity A&M University Camp - $340

PREVIOUS CAMPS ATTENDED

#1 JV Team Camp in College Station, Texas

Prospective JV players travel to College Station, Texas to play in Mike Kundstadt's Great American Shootout where our team will compete primarily against select AAU teams in the small varsity division. In 2014 we won the championship in the silver bracket.

Occasionally players expected to play on the Varsity squad next season are intentionally invited to this JV camp. If it is their first year to attend a Falconhoops camp, players invited to both a JV Camp and a Varsity Camp must attend the JV Camp in order to attend the Varsity Camp.

#2 Varsity Camp  - Texas A&M University VarsityTeam Camp.

An excellent Camp at A&M. 7 game minimum. Usually held the third weekend in June in College Station. Attended for the last 14 years..  Two adults usually accompany the team to provide supervision and coaching.

Previous Camps Attended

#4 Varsity Camp - Texas State University Varsity Team Camp

Attended in 2008 and 2009.

#5 Varsity or JV Camp - Rice University Team Camp

Local Camp (not overnight).  An excellent camp the first weekend in June. Unfortunately it conflicts with the JV Camp in College Station the same weekend and the boys prefer the A&M Camp. Held for the first time in 2008. Attended in 2008, 2009, 2010 (JV), 2011 (JV), and 2012(JV). In 2012 we won the championship in our bracket. No van transportation is provided for this camp.

#6  - Great American Shootout in Pearland (Varsity or JV)

Local Camp held the 3rd weekend in June. Attended for the first time in 2010. Our team played in the large varsity division. Van transportation not provided. Last three times we participated as a JV Team.

#7 -Varsity - Bob Knight's Basketball Camp at Texas Tech

First camp attended in 2001. Very competitive camp limited to school teams (no AAU teams). Competed against teams from Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas. Cost was over $500 per player due to airfare. Coach Knight spent more instructional time with players and team coaches than any Camp since.
