Clear Lake 76 - Milby 67

In Head Coach Tommy Penders' debut at Clear Lake, his Falcons provided a preview of what lies ahead this season --rapid pace, aggressive  style of play, and a plethora of outside shooting raining down on their opponents combined with penetrating action in the paint. His highly motivated squad was determined to win this opening game for their new coach in what could only be described as another typical thrilling Milby season opener.

With superlative coaching from both benches these two well matched teams competed in what was a close contest the entire game. The game was tied 8 times in the first half (down to the last 20 seconds of the half) and the lead changed 7 times in the second quarter. Projected to be primarily a match-up of two formidable opponents scoring mostly from outside, surprisingly, much of Milby's scoring in the first half was inside scoring coming alarmingly easy.

Lake's Brick Pomeroy had a standout performance with 18 points and 10 rebounds (50% from the field, 8 of 9 free throws). Pomeroy set the tone of the game with Lake's first goal, an aggressive drive to the hoop. In the first 2 minutes of the game all 7 of Lake's points had been scored by Brick. Scoring 13 of his 18 in the first quarter revealed to the public the Falcons' new secret weapon (although his teammates and coaches knew, Brick's ability to dominate has been a well kept secret which is likely to be revealed repeatedly this season).

Jacob Horton, Clear Lake's soon-to-be-famous outside shooter, had 15 points with only one basket coming from beyond the 3 point arc. Sophomore point guard Rob Lewis had 12 in a solid performance in his varsity debut.

Strength off the bench made a big difference with sterling play from Lucas LaHaug, Randall Hollimon, Blake Gregorcyk (10 points and 57% shooting efficiency), and freshman phenom Paris Clayton. FYI: Clayton is only the fourth freshman to play varsity basketball at Clear Lake since 1972. Andre Joseph, Richard Law, and Armie Lewis were his predecessors --very elite company to be in.

The Falcons held a slight lead almost the entire game and led by as much as 12 in the 4th quarter but there was never much breathing room as Milby would fight back to within 7.  Milby scored 19 points off free throws thanks to one official who just might have graduated from Milby. Milby's all district junior Tre Bennett (#22) led all scorers with 27 points.
