Cobalts Win 3 of 4 in Louisville "Battle on the Banks"

Posted by Mark Dietz on May 29 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
The Cobalts took their act on the road over the Memorial Day weekend playing in the Battle on the Banks Tournament at Derby City. In Game #1, Shannon Morgan took the pill and threw a gem going all 7 in a 4-2 Win over the Louisville Stallions. Steve Stigler (2-3 with a 2 RBI double) led the offense with two hits each from Akers, Stineman, and Todd Taylor. In Game #2, Paully Krause went 4 scoreless to get the Win. He was aided by a "hump-it-up" scoreless relief inning from Shannon Morgan and then 2 scoreless from Mike Taylor in the 6-0 shutout victory over the Louisville Stallions. Morgan also thought the 95 degree, 100% humidity day was a good time to catch the last 2 innings...not bad for a freckled 31 year old party machine. Game #3 had a slightly hung-over travel squad of Cobalts come out flat against a tough, young, and sober squad from Tradewater...heck, most weren't old enough to buy beer anyway. But no excuses, the Pirates took it to the Cobalts 9-3 for our first loss of the season. Game #4 was a gut check as the sun beat down the old 'Balts and added throbs to the heads of the young new Party 'Balts but Keith Becker went 5 strong innings in a 5-3 Win over the Western KY Rattlers. The Snakes were also a fine young team with plenty of spirit until the end...always a good idea to get out of the dugout and shake hands boys!!! But that spirit may have been dampered by the great relief work of 45 year old El Vic-a-tor Carreon who pitched thru bad hammies with 2 scoreless innings - atta boy Vic! Offense was led by Tom Taylor 4-4 with 3 RBIs. In addition to Morgan's animal performance on day #1, worthy of mention was the great play in all 4 games of second baseman Todd Taylor who hit, fielded, and ran the bases leading the team to 3 nice wins.image
