CoBALTS Close in Canada But Like They Say...

Posted by Mark Dietz on Sep 06 2004 at 05:00PM PDT
Only Counts in Horseshoes and Handgrenades! Overcoming last minute roster defections, 12 hour travel days, close encounters with pop-up campers, and lack of cell phone reception, a merry band of 11 CoBALT players headed deep into the Kootenay Rocky Mountains to play a little baseball over the Labor Day weekend. Keith Becker immediatley had the CoBALTS feeling "groovy" with a Game 1 Win over Spokane, WA throwing a 1 hitter (a bunt single). Game 2 versus eventual Tourney Champion San Diego was one of missed opportunities. Losing 6-4, the CoBALTS had many chances to notch a "W" but came up short. Stranded runners were again the downfall. Game 3 was the back-breaker with Shannon Morgan virtually un-hittable thru 6 innings, the CoBALTS opened the door with 3 errors in the 7th to allow Portland a 4-2 lead. A CoBALT rally in the bottom of the 7th crashed and burned in a heart-wrenching 4-3 loss that cannot be described here (go to www.grandforksbaseball.com. for complete game summaries). Overall, the CoBALTS (by far the oldest team at the tourney) represented Cincinnati as well as 11 fellas could have - even winning over some of the local Grand Forks fans. CoBALTS would like to thank Gerry Foster and his staff at the Grand Forks International. A well run, top level tournament that all teams should be lucky enough to experience. As for the CoBALTS - we'll be prepping for the Roy Hobbs World Series (Oct 30 - Nov 7) this Fall while Coach will be evaluating the player personnel. I'll be basing roster decisions on the kind of TEAM spirit the CoBALTS were founded upon 17 years ago. image
