Wilson, Jenkins Lead Alpines to Gold Medal

Posted by Jody Jewers on Aug 25 2001 at 05:00PM PDT
Brad Miller turned in a solid performance, but Derek Wilson threw a gem. Wilson Struck out eight while while only allowing two hits to earn Championship MVP honors. Along the way, Wilson retired 12 batters in a row before walking Craig Cooper with two outs in the seventh. First baseman Matt Jenkins added the offensive punch with a single, double and a two-run homer while scoring the other two runs for the Alpines. Jenkins was named Player of the Game. Saint John opened the scoring in the second inning when JP Wood overthrew first base while trying to complete a double-play. Marc Michaud reached on the error-aided fielders choice. Dartmouth's best scoring opportunity came in the home half of the second when Dartmouth had runners at the corners with one out. Wilson struck out Wood and got Mark Weeks to fly out to left to end the threat. In the sixth, Jenkins led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Marc Michaud sacrifice fly. With runners at first and second and only one out, Miller struck out Mike King on three pitches and induced a ground out to second by Brent MacLellan to stop the damage. In the top of the seventh, Jenkins made his night complete by hitting a two-run shot that also plated Colin Ring who had reached on an infield single, to give the Alpines a commanding 4-0 lead. After getting Dave MacMullin and Joel Irvine to ground-out to second, the Dry seemed to get a couple breaks when Wilson walked Cooper and hit Mark Weeks. That was as far as any late inning rally would go as Ryan Doucette popped out to short to end the game. Saint John, NB 010 001 2 - 4 9 1 Dartmouth, NS 000 000 0 - 0 2 1 Dereck Wilson (1-0) and Colin Ring; Brad Miller (0-2) and Mark Weeks. HR: Matt Jenkins (1)
