NSSBL season to begin May 22

Posted by Jody Jewers on Apr 16 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

The 32nd season of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League is set to begin May 22 at Memorial Park in Kentville. Formed in 1977, the NSSBL has been a summer staple on the provincial sports scene (there was no league play in 1984) and has produced four Canadian championship clubs.

All five teams from the 2008 season -- defending champion Halifax Pelham Canadians, the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry, Kentville Wildcats, Sydney Sooners and Truro Bearcats -- are back for this year. Interleague play against the four New Brunswick Senior Baseball League entries will continue this season, with Nova Scotia hosting New Brunswick on June 20-21, and New Brunswick hosting Nova Scotia on July 11-12. Summerside has taken a leave of absence from the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League this season.

The 28-game regular season is slated to end Aug. 11, with the top four regular-season finishers qualifying for the playoffs. The postseason winner will represent the league at the 2010 nationals. Each NSSBL team is also scheduled to play two exhibition games against the Nova Scotia Canada Games team to help it prepare for its competition during the second week of the Aug. 15-29 event in P.E.I.

Dartmouth will host the 2009 Canadian senior baseball championship Aug. 20-23, thereby receiving automatic entry. Halifax qualifies as the reigning NSSBL champion.

Jody Jewers of River Hebert was voted in as new NSSBL president/chief administrative officer at the league meeting in March, succeeding Jim McEachern of Sydney, who will continue to serve on the league executive as past-president and has assumed the role of head coach of the Sooners. The remainder of the league executive was elected to another one-year term. Returning to the league executive are Terry Dunbrack of Pictou (vice-president), Kay Sperdakes of Lower Sackville (secretary/treasurer), and Burton Russell of Kentville (statistician).
