Higgins Throws No-Hitter

Posted by Jody Jewers on Aug 01 2001 at 05:00PM PDT
Craig Higgins of the Truro Bearcats kept Dartmouth hitters in check in what was the first no-hitter in the Senior League since May May 30th, 1992 when Duane Doucette of the Yarmouth Gateways beat the Northside Ramblers 19-1, as Truro beat Dartmouth 10-1. Jeol Irvine scored the lone Dartmouth run on a ground-out after being hit by a pitch, stealing second, and moving to third on a ground out. Craig Higgins' no-hitter is the sixth in the League. Bill Young in 1977, Hugh Fraser in 1979 and Dave Harris in 1983 had three of the previous no-hitters while pitching for the Kentville Wildcats. Rheal Cormier of the Moncton Mets threw a 13-3 no-no in what Jim Mosher believed to be a playoff game. Dave Harris retired the first 20 batters in order before hitting the 21 batter he faced with two out in the seventh to break up his bid for a perfect game. August 14, 1983 Yarmouth 000 000 0 - 0 0 1 Kentville 010 471 x - 13 18 0 Paul Jacquard (L), Ronnin White (5) George Purdy (5), and Carl Nickerson; Dave Harris (W) and Sandy Van Blarcom. The loss puts Dartmouth into a virtual tie with Sydney just two days before starting a three game set this weekend in Sydney. The win for Truro puts them in third, three games up on both Dartmouth and Sydney. Ironically, despite the no-hitter, Truro still remain the only team in the League not have shut-out an opponent this season. August 2, 2001 Truro 001 040 500 - 10 13 3 Dartmouth 100 000 000 - 1 0 1 Craig Higgins (W) and Jason Hoyt; Luis Roberts (L), Mike Alexander (5), Gus Prowse (8) and Mark Weeks. HRs: Tru: Craig Higgins, Jeff Chisholm.
