Nova Scotia brings home gold!

Posted by Jody Jewers on Aug 28 2005 at 05:00PM PDT
For the first time in the history of the Baseball Canada senior championship, Nova Scotia has won back-to-back national crowns. A 19-member all-star team posted a 5-1 record en route to the title in Kamloops, B.C., last week, defeating Saskatchewan 7-6 in the gold-medal game late Sunday night. Ryan Veinot of the Halifax Pelham Canadians, named the tournament's top defensive player, and Jamie Vallis of the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry hit home runs in support of winning pitcher Nial Hughes of the Truro Bearcats, with Jason Bailey of Dartmouth getting the final three outs in the seventh inning for the save. It was Bailey's second appearance of the day, having thrown a complete game in Nova Scotia's 11-4 win over New Brunswick in a morning semifinal. Nova Scotia scored nine times in the sixth inning to rally for the victory. It's the fourth national senior title for Nova Scotia. The Kentville Wildcats won in 1985, and the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry in 1998 and 2004. The Nova Scotia all-stars are scheduled to land Tuesday at Halifax International Airport at 9:30 p.m. For full results, click on the "Senior Nationals" link on the left-hand side of the page.
