Posted by Cecil Wright on Sep 24 2011 at 05:00PM PDT
Cory Christie of the Sydney Sooners has been chosen as the NSSBL Most Valuable Player for 2011. In voting by the league coaches, Christie was recognized for his outstanding season in which he was among the league's leaders in almost every offensive category while playing all infield positions.
Christie finished 7th among batters with a .378 average, 4th in RBIs with 31, tied for 2nd in home runs with 6, and 7th in hits with 48. He played a huge role in helping his Sooners qualify for the final playoff spot, smashing 2 home runs and driving in 6 runs in the final game of the season, a win over the Truro Bearcats.
Christie was an addition to the Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians roster for the Canadian Senior Baseball Championship in Chatham, N.B. and in a game against the Chatham Ironmen hammered 2 home runs off former major leaguer, Jason Dickson, who was the leading pitcher in the N.B. circuit with a record of 7-1.
Other individual award winners and the league all-star team will be announced later this week.
