Dawgs help Israel to 4 and 3 record in France

Posted by Shmuel Goldstein on Jul 14 2004 at 05:00PM PDT
Selected results of games, as reported by Micah Winston: Tues, July 13, 2004: Israel 6, Slovakia 1 On the 2nd day of the European Softball championships, Israel came away with 2 crucial wins. On a beautiful sunny morning against Slovakia with a good pitcher, we were tied 1-1 after 4 innings. Yaniv Gohary scored the only run on speed alone [go Dawgs!] and pitcher Elyaeed Moore held the Slovaks in check. We broke it open in the 4th when they couldn't handle our bunts. The big blows were a pinch hit bunt single by Corey Fried and a 2 run single by Albert Sarkovitch. We scored 4 in the 4th and added another in the 5th, and Elyaeed shut them down. Stars on defense were Yonatan Kunda at SS, Gohary in CF & Golan Halley at 3rd and RF. Israel 25, Great Britian 10 The 2nd game of the day was against the British. We started some subs and scored 16 in the 1st. We put in Golan to pitch and then Corey but they only got 1 out & gave up 8 so Elyaeed came back in to shut them down. On offense, Golan hit a towering homerun but there weren't many hits. Boris Yegudayev was great at 2B, Adir Hagbi made a nice play at 3rd, Golan was solid and Corey had a nice shoestring catch in RF. Spirits r high, we just hope that Elyaeed's arm won't fall off & that Kunda will recover from a twisted ankle. Wednesday, July 14, 2004: Denmark 10, Israel 4 In their fourth game, this time against a very good Danish team, the Israel national Junior softball team played very well & were tied 4-4 after 4 1/2 innings but then we made a couple of mistakes on defense & lost the fighting spirit & gave up 3 more in the 6th. Elyaeed Moore was again great pitching even though his arm is now hanging by a thread. Boris Yegudayev at 2B Yoav Eliahu in LF & Corey Fried in RF were the defensive stars. We only had about 4 hits by Albert Sarkovich, Yonatan Kunda, Elyaeed & scored our runs mostly on walks, steals & wild pitches. Yaniv Gohary had a perfect squeeze bunt but the runner didn't go and then was out trying to score on a wild pitch... In tomorrow’s game, our subs will play alot because we have an easy game against the Russians and a hard game against the Czechs. If we beat Russia then we will clinch 3rd place, which will guarantee an invitation to the World Championships next year to be held in Price Edward Island, Canada, next summer.
