Team field trip: Oakland University defeats IPFW 6-0 It rained. Then it REALLY rained. Then it just drizzled. Then the game started. Then the sun came out and it was really hot. Then our hometown Oakland U. women’s soccer team dismantled the visiting Purdue – Fort Wayne squad. Everybody seemed to have a great time and I’m very happy that most of the team showed despite the on again off again weather. For those who came, you were treated to some incredible soccer. We will try to do this again next month. Then it rained again. Check them out. I have added Oakland's Womens Soccer page to our Very Cool Links. Now you can easily keep tabs on their season's progress, team news, schedules, etc. [from OU website] Oakland Bounces Back With Big Win Over IPFW The Oakland University women's soccer team avoided the rain and back-to-back losses with a 6-0 victory over IPFW this afternoon on the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies move to 3-1 on the season, while IPFW drops to 0-3. Oakland struck first on a deflection off an IPFW player as sophomore Shelly Piccirillo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/North Myer) hit a header and scored her first goal of the season at the 7:51 minute mark. Sophomore Beth Howson (Grosse Pointe/Grosse Pointe South) followed that up with a couple of goals of her own at the 26:24 and 33:39 marks of the first half. Freshman Katie Arnott (St. Johns, Newfoundland/Bishops College) scored her first goal of her collegiate career at the 35:47 minute mark as she blasted a shot past the IPFW netminder to give Oakland a 4-0 lead after the first half. OU's Ashley McGhee (Burlington, Ontario/Lester B. Pearson) put the Golden Grizzlies up 5-0 with a goal from just outside the box as Erica Demers (Welland, Ontario/Centennial) sprung her free with a pass down the sideline 52:32 into the game. Piccirillo netted the final goal of the game as she was fed in the box from McGhee and gave OU a 6-0 victory. Goalkeepers Sarah Buckland (Burlington, Ontario/Lester B. Pearson) and Laura Cowham (Caledonia/East Kentwood) combined for a shutout as Cowham made one save. "This was a good game to allow us to work on attacking ideas," said O'Shea. "We played hard defensively to win the ball back which prevented IPFW possession." "We created some good scoring chances and capitalized on them." Oakland faces its second Big Ten opponent of the season as they travel to West Lafeyette to take on Purdue. The Boilermakers and Golden Grizzlies do battle at 4 p.m. image
