Big First Half Insures Win Over Haverhill 6-1

Posted by Ray Flaherty on Sep 27 2000 at 09:58PM PDT
Central Catholic went into Haverhill Stadium knowing that they needed to score in order to stay with upset minded Haverhill. Haverhill, who is having its best season in recent history, has been scoring a ton lately so the Raiders tried to take care of business early. Knowing that Haverhill plays a four man front with lots of scoring punch, Central was able to attack their defense and score early as Steve Perry continues his hot touch with a goal at the 3 minute mark of the first half. Joe Mead and Jason Rourke provided the assists. Jeff Gannon scored at the 20 minute mark as Rourke once again was the playmaker. Perry and Gannon combined for the third goal at the 25 minute mark and Mike MacDonald took a Pass from Ryan Veith and beat the goalie with a nifty left footer from 25 yards out. The second half was a completely different game as Haverhill came out stormin'. They dominated play for 25 minutes but were only able to convert on one opportunity, a dead ball goal by Henry Marin, at the 52 minute mark of the contest. Although they were able to keep up the pressure Central responded with a solid finish. Jay Rourke took a pass from Ross Tremblay at the 68 minute mark and beat the keeper. Jeff Gannon Closed out the scoring on a dead ball goal at the 84th minute. Alex deSorgo was big in net for the Raiders with 9 saves. Central is now 5-2-1 and plays Lawrence on Thursday, 9-28, at the South Lawrence East School at 3:30 PM.
