14U Red Wins NJBL Tourna-ment
The NY Gothams 14U Red team took the NJBL Memorial Day tournament championship, sweeping throughout and ending with a 6-0 record. Coach Gilbert Rodriguez described the hitting as contagious, with the team scoring a total of 60 runs during tournament play, and an additional 26 during the playoffs.
The 14U Blue team also gets a nod for coming in second in the Scarsdale Memorial Day Classic. The team came from behind to tie up the score in the final game, only to lose in extra innings.
NY Gothams Commit to College Ball
Two members of the 16U squad have signed letters of intent to play college ball. This fall, Gabe Faithful will head to Maine, where hell attend Bowdoin College, and Robert Shimasaki will play for Middlebury in Vermont.
May Player of the Month
Nelson Rodriguez, catcher for the NY Gothams 14U Red team, stands out during the month of May for his performance during the Memorial Day NJBL tournament. Nelson piled up 15 hits, including 3 doubles and 3 homeruns and batted .600 during the tournament.
More than just a slugger, Nelson is admired by his team and coaches for his commitment to the game. Says 14U Red Coach Gil Rodriguez, "Nelson is undoubtedly passionate for the game. He's a competitor with a tremendous work ethic and desire to improve as a player." He adds, "What's most admirable is his quiet leadership and humbleness regardless of his success and accomplishments."
During Spring 2009, Nelson started as a freshman for George Washington High School's highly competetive varsity squad. During his first season there, he batted .452, with an on-base percentage of .558. Nelson says that one of his goals while there is, "to help bring the school another PSAL championship."
Nelson lives in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood with his mother, Ana Mendez. He is especially inspired by his deceased father, Nelson Rodriguez, who played minor league ball with the Pittsburgh Pirates and whose number 25 Nelson wears in his memory.
