BOYS, GIRLS ROMP OVER SMYRNA, POLYTECH, CENTRAL

Chad Carpenter ran a course-record 16:53 to move up to second on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list, while Keith Short followed with a 17:41 to take the 11th spot on the list, helping the boys to a sweep of Smyrna, Polytech and Sussex Central Wednesday at Redden State Forest. Marissa McDonnell ran a 23:16 as the girls took the top five spots in their race. Overall, 25 MHS runners set career-best times: Carpenter, Short, Scott Hall, Jon Wyman, Justin Bloom, Chris Demby, Josh Chilcote, Robert White, Chris Battaglia, Rashad Matthews, Matt Holloway, Allan Passwaters, Chris Pettyjohn, Christian Dubsky, Andrew Meade, Brandon Rogers, McDonnell, Amber Zedney, Erica Godwin, Jessica Fitzpatrick, Candice Young, Maire O'Neill, Julee Farley, Jackie Price and Monica White. Chad Carpenter finished fifth overall with a 17:18 and Keith Short followed with an 18:24 to pace the varsity boys to a fourth-place finish at the Lake Forest Invitational Saturday. The varsity girls finished 14th and the junior varsity girls and boys each placed fourth as well. For the varsity boys, Jon Wyman and Justin Bloom each ran their best times at Killens Pond, while Scott Hall, Joey Palumbo and Chris Demby rounded out the attack. For the girls, freshman Marissa McDonnell ran a career-best 24:33 to lead the way, while Amber Zedney, Amanda Meade, Erica Godwin, Candice Young, Megan Pastor and Rosie Seagraves completed the pack. In the junior varsity races, Allan Passwaters, Matt Holloway, Rashad Matthews, Chris Pettyjohn, Andrew Meade and Julee Farley collected career-best times. Jessica Fitzpatrick also ran her best time at Killens, while Lindsay Kenton just missed a medal. BOYS JUST MISS UPSET OF DEFENDING STATE CHAMP

Chad Carpenter ran a season-best 17:21 and Keith Short and Scott Hall ran career-best times to pace the boys to a near upset of the defending Div. II state champion Cape Henlopen on Wednesday. In the end, though, Cape eked out a 27-29 win while the boys also just missed Caesar Rodney, 25-32. Freshman Marissa McDonnell led the girls with a 24:34 as the girls fell to two top-ten teams, Cape and CR. For the boys, Jon Wyman, Chris Demby, Joey Palumbo and Justin Bloom rounded out the varsity finishers while Amber Zedney, Erica Godwin, Amanda Meade, Megan Pastor, Candice Young and Maire O'Neill scored varsity finishers for the girls. Brandon Miller (MHSCC '02), now a freshman at Goldey Beacom College, ran a 29:46 to place 90th out of 196 at the Lebanon Valley Invitational on Saturday. messiah College also attended the event, but Jessi Rivera (MHSCC '01) did not run. Visit www.lvc.edu athletics for complete results. Ben Wynne (MHSCC '00), now a junior at Wesley College, ran a tough course at the Towson Invitational on Saturday for a time of 38:09.
