State College hoists hockey title
From CDT staff reports
BELLE VERNON -- For the second straight year, the State College ice hockey team is sitting atop the scholastic hockey scene in western Pennsylvania.
Nick Petrick scored three goals and Brian James added two goals and two assists as the Little Lions overpowered a high-scoring Quigley team 7-1 Thursday to defend the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League Open Cup title at Rostraver Ice Gardens.
"It feels excellent," said Petrick, who scored the only two goals of the first period. "It's real hard to repeat."
Dan Petrick and Georg Semechin also scored for State College, which finished 22-1-1, its lone loss coming by way of forfeit. Calvin Michael made 20 saves in the win.
"It feels really good," said State College coach Tim Holdcroft. "Obviously we were the team to beat. We have eight seniors, kids who have played together for many years. It's a great way for them to end their scholastic career with a championship."
The Little Lions held Quigley to 21 shots and held 40-goal scorer Josh Marshall scoreless. Marshall did manage an assist on Quigley's only goal.
State College took a 2-0 lead into the third before exploding for five in the third.
"It was a tight first two periods," Petrick said, "but then we opened it up and the bounces went our way in the third."
