In the United States there are millions of athletes that participate in sports. However, there is the potential for injury or illness to occur if an athlete's musculoskeletal system is unprepared to handle the duration and magnitude of force that develops during practice and game situations.

While the concept of pre-season conditioning for young athletes may seem unnecessary to some coaches and teachers, it may be one of the best preventative measures to injury, such as muscle pulls. According to some sports medicine specialists, an estimated 50% of overuse injuries sustained by young athletes while playing organized sports could be prevented if participants were better prepared to play the game.

While the total elimination of youth sports injuries is an unrealistic goal, it is important for young athletes to participate in at least eight weeks of preparatory conditioning (including general strength, aerobic and flexibility exercises) prior to sports participation.

Since high school athletes are often forced to train harder and longer in order to excel in sports, providing them with an opportunity to participate in a pre-season conditioning

program is important. This training will prepare them for the demands of sports participation which seems reasonable and worthwhile. During this time, correctable risk factors such as muscle imbalances, poor flexibility, and poor physical condition could be identified and corrected by physicians, therapists, and strength and conditioning specialists. Further, sensible conditioning guidelines and information on proper nutrition could be provided.

If athletes take the time to get into sport specific shape and walk onto the field in shape for the season, they will avoid many unnecessary injuries and will have a much stronger and enjoyable season ahead of them with potentially greater participation.

Berlin, CT - The Berlin Youth Wrestling Program is proud to announce the scholarship winners. The scholarship selection committee has chosen Shane Day to receive a $500 scholarship to be used at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island where he is enrolled this fall. "Shane's outstanding high school career and involvement with the youth program from such an early age made his selection very appropriate", stated Roger Moss, Head Coach of BYW. Moss went on to say "It is very satisfying as a coach of a youth program to watch your former wrestlers progress and achieve greatness at the high school level." In his four year high school career Shane complied a 170-24 varsity record, 2006 Outstanding wrestler for the Northwest Conference Tournament, 2006 and 2007 Coaches Award, four time conference Champion and 2006 Class L and State Open Champion. Shane was also a four year Unified Sport Partner while at Berlin High School. This year the Scholarship Committee awarded a second scholarship in the amount of $250 to Spencer Polaske due to his outstanding academic, community achievements while being a four year varsity wrestler at Berlin High."Spencer's high level of achievement in the classroom could not be overlooked by the selection committee", stated Moss. Spencer was a team player on the team and participated in many activities outside the wrestling room while being a member of the varsity team for four years. Spencer was a member of the National Honor Society, John Hopkins Talented Youth Program recipient, ranked in the top 11% of his graduating class and a member of the Northwest Conference All-Academic Team all four years in high school. Spencer will be attending Villanova, where he is finance major.

The selection committee believe that these two young men have set the standard for all others to acheive in the future of this scholarship.

The Berlin Minutemen were represented at the first New England Kids Wrestling Tournament held in Hudson, MA. Connecticut wrestlers amazed 356 team points to place first distancing Massachusetts in second place with 208 points in the Division 1 age groups. First up in Division 2, was Jacob Eliades at 80lb. Jacob won his first match by fall in 3:39. He then last to the Massachusetts champion 11-6. His next match was against Matthew McAlister from Connecticut who he had beaten at the CT State Tournament 6-5, this time McAlister got the best of Jacob and beat him 2-0. At 90lbs was Nick Mangiafico. He lost his first match to a wrestler from Maine and then won 5-2 before dropping his third match by fall. Next at 95 lbs was Wotjus Zak, who lost his first match to the Rhode Island Champion 2-0 and then lost his second match 9-0. Coach Moss said, "Wotjus didn't wrestle in a lot of tournaments this year so to even be at this meet shows great strides in his developement as a wrestler. I was very happy with his matches." Brendan Butler wrestling at 105 lbs. won his first match 6-3, lost his second match to eventual champion from Connecticut Elliott Antler. In the consolations match he beat the champ from Maine 5-3 and the second place finisher from Maine 5-3 to take third place, our first medalist. In the Middle School Division II Berlin was represented by Tyler Cunningham and Mason Powers. Tyler competed in the 100 lb division where he won his first match by fall, second to Maine Champion 1-0 before losing to eventual champion Brad Myers 7-0. Tyler then lost 3-2 before beating Tyler Tibe from Connecticut for 5th place. Cunningham had lost to Tibe in the Connecticut qualifier and State Tournament before beating at New Englands'. Coach Moss added, "Tyler wrestled really tough in his last match and pulled off the 3-0 win which really was satisfying seeing he had lost to him before." Mason Powers came into the Tournament as the third place finisher from Connecticut in the 137 lb division. He won his first match by fall in 2:30, and then dropped a 2-0 decision to the Massachusetts State Champion. Mason then had to come from deep in the consolation bracket beating Mike Sullivan from New Hampshire 1-0 another New Hampshire wrestler 7-5, the Maine champion 2-0 and winning in the consolation final 2-0. Coach Moss summarized the tournament as follows, "This was a chance for our wrestlers to wrestle in a big time tournament with the best from other states. It should really open their eyes to see what they need to do to improve and compete at the next level. It also should give them some goals to wrestle in the High School New England Tournament before they are Seniors." image
