Dan Madey won both outstanding wrestler and fastest fall in leading his Berlin team to the win in the Berlin Invitational. Madey earned four pins in 3:24 in winning the 135-pound class with a 51-second pin of Ridgefield’s Brendan Cleary. Berlin finished with 199.5 points, besting Avon’s 156. Locust Valley (N.Y.) was third (132.5) followed by Hand (122), Ridgefield (106), Maloney (91), Xavier (89.5), Bulkeley (70), Staples (67), Vinal Tech (58), Norwalk (48) and Masuk (34.5). Berlin’s Nick Catalano was a 2-1 winner in overtime over Ben Radzunas in the 152 final for the only other Redcoat winner. The team did have several other fine performances, including Jim Solek, who reached the 160-pound final before losing to Ridgefield’s Andrew Murphy by pin in 2:46. Also, Eric McCurdy finished second at 171 pounds, losing 6-3 to Ridgefield’s Eric Sellers and Chuck Desrochers advanced to the 189 final, but dropped a 13-4 decision to Masuk’s Nick Provenzano. Mike Crowe also reached a final, but an 11-9 setback to Ridgefield’s Luke Raithel in the 119-final resulted in a second. Bryan Wasik finished second in the 98-pound division and Shane Day was a third-place finisher at 125 pounds. Both are freshman and former Minutemen! Way to go!!!!!
