ADVICE FOR PARENTS

Posted by Roger Moss on Oct 26 2004 at 05:00PM PDT
Here are ten tips from the NAYS for parents who take an active part in your children's athletics: 1. Remember that where teams practice and wrestle is like your kid's classroom--respect the classroom. 2. Make only positive, encouraging comments to the wrestlers on both teams. 3. Remember ...making mistakes is part of the learning process--don't criticize. 4. Discuss your concern away from the wrestlers and, in particular, away from your child. 5. Respect the officials. 6. Focus on enjoying the sport and participation rather than winning and losing. 7. Ask kid's if they had fun. Then ask why or why not? 8. Control your emotions. 9. Get interested in your child's wrestling career. 10. Learn the rules of the sport of wrestling before you criticize, ridicule or question a call. 11. Stay home if you can't control yourself or you get angry when kids don't wrestle perfectly. 12. Be a better role model to your kids. Kids look up to their parents and imitate them. 13. Don't nag your kids. 14. Commend your child for the good things they did no matter what the results of the match were. 15. If your kids' team wins, compliment the opponents. 16. If your kids' team loses, compliment the opponents. Don't frown! 17. Celebrate all matches, duals or tournaments, win or lose. Concentrate on effort. 18. Remember... it's their wrestling match, not yours. 19. Don't make sports all-important. There are many more things in life. 20. Love and support your kids AT ALL TIMES
