Minutemen Have First Two New England Champions

Posted by Roger Moss on Mar 12 2011 at 04:00PM PST

There were only two Minutemen represented at the Kids New England Championship on March 12, 2011 but Michael Patterson had something to prove after placing second at the CT State's and Seth Pelletier wanted to show his first place finish was not a fluke.  No Minutemen had ever won a New England title.

The Minutemen hadn't been to the New England Championships since Colin Cunningham (freshman at Xavier) and Riley Grieder represented the Minutemen.  Patterson moved into the number one seed after state champ Gabriel Schwartz didn't compete who Patterson had hoped to see again to revenge his lose at states.  Patterson faced Evan Frank who placed 3rd in Massachusetts in his first match winning easily by technical fall 17-0.  In the semi-finals he faced Zach Eastman the Maine Champ and dominated him 14-4.  The finals had Michael facing Rhode Island champ Daniel Henley who had pinned his way to the finals.  Michael didn't let that intimidate him and countered a takedown by Henley to put him to his back and win by pin in 30 seconds to become the first New England Champion in Minuteman history.

Coach Moss said, "Michael wasn't sure he wanted to go since Schwartz wasn't going to be there.  I told him people might get once chance in a lifetime to be the first to do something ever and this was an opportunity he didn't want to pass up."  After winning the NE title Patterson say, "Winning New Englands was definitely better than winning States."

The Minutemen were looking for its second champion with Seth Pelletier in the 145 lb division.  Pelletier faced Rhode Island champion Dante Delbonis in his first round winning by pin in 1:55.  He then faced Daniel Contino from Connecticut who he had beaten at CT States and won again 16-7.  The final matched Pelletier against Jordan Silva a repeat of the CT State finals. Pelletier was focused and worked until the end pulling out a 4-2 win for the Minutemen's second New England Champion.
