COLUMBUS — Shelbyville came into the Columbus East Sectional averaging 35 points per game.

The Golden Bears came nowhere close to that in an offensive meltdown Friday night against Bloomington South at the Orange Pit at Columbus East High School.

Shelbyville shot 11 percent from the field and 33 percent from the free-throw line in a 50-13 loss to the Panthers (15-7).

Mackenzie McNew hit a trio of three-pointers to lead Bloomington South with 15 points. Lauren Whitlach had 14 points – all in the first half.

Riley Achenbach led the Golden Bears (3-18) with four points.

Shelbyville’s offensive execution was sound in the first quarter. Dribble penetration got the Golden Bears into the lane for open looks. Converting proved to be the biggest problem, though. And when the offense fell apart, Shelbyville’s improving defense went missing, too.

“We’re a team that when we have trouble offensively, we get down on ourselves,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. “The last couple of games we’ve done a phenomenal job defensively of, when we’re not scoring, stopping people. I don’t know if it was the pressure of the game or just the atmosphere itself.”

Shelbyville took the lead in the first two minutes when Riley Achenbach, who came into the game leading the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) and 3-point shooting (43 percent), drilled a 3-pointer from the wing.

Achenbach added a free throw late in the quarter to tie the game at 4-4, as Bloomington South, who made national headlines earlier this season when it defeated Indianapolis Arlington 107-2, had trouble scoring.

Two baskets by Whitlach in the final 50 seconds opened up a 9-4 advantage after a quarter in which the Golden Bears were 1 of 12 from the field.

McNew had two 3s in the second quarter and Whitlach scored nine points as part of an 18-0 run that pushed the lead to 31-8 by halftime.

“It seemed like in the second quarter our defense let up,” said Norris. “We played exactly how we wanted to play in the first quarter ... we crashed the boards. In the second quarter, we saw the same (Bloomington South) plays we’ve gone over in practice, the same things we talked about and they were beating us with them.

“It’s just a lack of communication and letting the elements get to us. We were clearly down on ourselves going into the lockerroom at halftime.”

Shelbyville was 3-of-24 from the field in the first half and 1-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Bloomington South went deep into the roster for much of the second half knowing it would have a date with top-ranked Columbus North in the championship game.

The Class 4A, No. 1 Bull Dogs battled past Bloomington North 60-46 in the semifinals Friday then returned Saturday night to knock off Bloomington South 66-45 in the sectional championship game.

Columbus North (25-0) faces No. 2 Bedford North Lawrence (24-0) at noon Saturday in a regional semifinal game at Bedford.

Triton Central and Morristown must go the long road through their own sectionals while Shelbyville avoided a quarterfinal game at the Columbus East Sectional.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association filled the brackets Sunday for the 38th Annual Girls’ Basketball State Tournament. For the ninth consecutive year, a record number of teams (399) will compete for state championships in four classes.

Sectional games begin on Feb. 5 with championships culminating on Feb. 9. Regional tournaments are Feb. 16. Semistates follow Feb. 23. The four state championship games return to the Hulman Center in Terre Haute March 2.

The top-ranked team in Class 4A looms over Sectional 14 played this year at Columbus East.

The quarterfinal pairings pit the host Olympians (9-9) against Bloomington South (12-6) with the winner facing Shelbyville (3-16) in the first semifinal, and East Central (16-3) against Bloomington North (7-12) with the winner getting Columbus North (22-0).

The Golden Bears have not faced either of the Bloomington schools this season. They are 0-3 against the Columbus schools and EastCentral.

All six teams in Class 2A Sectional 43 have at least seven wins but that’s little comfort with 18-1 Triton Central in the field.

Indianapolis-based programs from Ritter, Scecina and Crispus Attucks have suffered losses to the fifth-ranked Tigers this season by an average of 41 points.

Ritter (14-4) opens the tournament against Attucks (7-12) with the winner returning for a semifinal date with Scecina (7-11).

Triton Central hosts Washington (12-6) in the quarterfinals. Metropolitan (7-11) takes on the winner in the second semifinal.

The Tigers’ only loss this season came to No. 2 Heritage Christian on Dec. 4. Now that the tournament is set in stone, the two programs are on track for a regional championship game rematch at Speedway on Feb. 16.

Less than one week ago, Class A, No. 8 Southwestern defeated Greenwood Christian 70-46. The Cougars get a rematch on the opening night of Sectional 59 held at the Bee Hive in Morristown.

The host Yellow Jackets (9-9) open two nights of quarterfinal games against Lutheran (7-10). The Saints defeated Morristown 57-29 on Jan. 24.

Southwestern (14-4), the defending sectional champ, follows against Greenwood Christian (12-7), the only other program in the eight-team field with a winning record.

On Feb. 6, Irvington Prep (2-18) faces Baptist Academy (4-15). The final quarterfinal game has Edinburgh (4-14) battling Waldron (5-13). The Mohawks defeated Edinburgh 48-42 on Jan. 21.

Southwestern is the regional host for the sectional winners from Morristown, Clay City, Bethesda Christian and Jac-Cen-Del.
