Triton Central and Morristown must go the long road through their own sectionals while Shelbyville avoided a quarterfinal game at the Columbus East Sectional.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association filled the brackets Sunday for the 38th Annual Girls’ Basketball State Tournament. For the ninth consecutive year, a record number of teams (399) will compete for state championships in four classes.

Sectional games begin on Feb. 5 with championships culminating on Feb. 9. Regional tournaments are Feb. 16. Semistates follow Feb. 23. The four state championship games return to the Hulman Center in Terre Haute March 2.

The top-ranked team in Class 4A looms over Sectional 14 played this year at Columbus East.

The quarterfinal pairings pit the host Olympians (9-9) against Bloomington South (12-6) with the winner facing Shelbyville (3-16) in the first semifinal, and East Central (16-3) against Bloomington North (7-12) with the winner getting Columbus North (22-0).

The Golden Bears have not faced either of the Bloomington schools this season. They are 0-3 against the Columbus schools and EastCentral.

All six teams in Class 2A Sectional 43 have at least seven wins but that’s little comfort with 18-1 Triton Central in the field.

Indianapolis-based programs from Ritter, Scecina and Crispus Attucks have suffered losses to the fifth-ranked Tigers this season by an average of 41 points.

Ritter (14-4) opens the tournament against Attucks (7-12) with the winner returning for a semifinal date with Scecina (7-11).

Triton Central hosts Washington (12-6) in the quarterfinals. Metropolitan (7-11) takes on the winner in the second semifinal.

The Tigers’ only loss this season came to No. 2 Heritage Christian on Dec. 4. Now that the tournament is set in stone, the two programs are on track for a regional championship game rematch at Speedway on Feb. 16.

Less than one week ago, Class A, No. 8 Southwestern defeated Greenwood Christian 70-46. The Cougars get a rematch on the opening night of Sectional 59 held at the Bee Hive in Morristown.

The host Yellow Jackets (9-9) open two nights of quarterfinal games against Lutheran (7-10). The Saints defeated Morristown 57-29 on Jan. 24.

Southwestern (14-4), the defending sectional champ, follows against Greenwood Christian (12-7), the only other program in the eight-team field with a winning record.

On Feb. 6, Irvington Prep (2-18) faces Baptist Academy (4-15). The final quarterfinal game has Edinburgh (4-14) battling Waldron (5-13). The Mohawks defeated Edinburgh 48-42 on Jan. 21.

Southwestern is the regional host for the sectional winners from Morristown, Clay City, Bethesda Christian and Jac-Cen-Del.
