For the seventh-straight season, Shelbyville’s girls basketball program reached the first-quarter mark of the season with a losing record.

Measuring success with wins is not necessarily a realistic goal for first-year coach Scott Larrabee. Instead, he will trust what his eyes are showing him.

The Golden Bears opened their Hoosier Heritage Conference schedule Friday at William L. Garrett Gymnasium against Pendleton Heights – a program they have lost to six straight years by an average margin of 26 points.

Shelbyville survived a rocky start but never gained the lead in a 45-41 loss to the Arabians (4-1, 2-0 HHC).

“I believe our team knows we’re going in the right direction,” said Larrabee. “I don’t think there is any doubt in that.

“It’s tough when you lose close games against quality opponents. Our goal this season is to continually improve from day one to the end of the year. And we have, but we have to have forward thinking, not watch the scoreboard and bring our lunch pail to work everyday. That’s how we’re going to get better.”

Adrianna Phillips scored off her own miss with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter to give the Arabians a 43-40 lead.

Shelbyville’s Taylor Pierce hit the first of two free throws 20 seconds later to cut the lead to 43-41 and an Arabians turnover gave the Golden Bears an opportunity to tie or take the lead.

Allyson Conner missed a 3-point attempt and Alexis Tackett’s hurried shot off the rebound missed the mark.

Following a timeout, Pendleton Heights chose to spread the floor and force Shelbyville to foul. But with the Arabians already in the double bonus, Larrabee challenged his team to get the ball back.

“I feel like shooting two free throws is pretty easy to do and (the Arabians) were making them so I wanted to try and double team them and force them to call timeout,” said Larrabee.

After Riley Achenbach twice nearly got steals, Pendleton Heights called timeout with 19 seconds to go.

“The kids did absolutely what we wanted to do and we almost got a couple of turnovers,” said Larrabee. “It was just tough with them in the double bonus. That makes that first free throw a little easier.”

Kiawna Cottrell found herself with the ball and an open lane to the rim so the senior attacked and was fouled.

She hit the first free throw, missed the second but the Golden Bears couldn’t get the rebound.

Skyla Baird was fouled with 10 seconds to go and she hit 1-of-2 free throws to set the final score.

Cottrell led her team with 11 points and nine rebounds. Phillips finished with 10.

Tackett topped Shelbyville with 13 points. Conner had 10 and Pierce finished with seven points and 11 rebounds.

Shelbyville fell behind 11-3 early but cut the lead to 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.

A 7-0 run in the second quarter pulled the Golden Bears (1-5, 0-1 HHC) within one. Tackett scored just before the halftime buzzer to tie the game at 24-24.

Shelbyville’s junior varsity team fell to 0-6 with a 39-25 loss.

Madalyn Toll led the Golden Bears with seven points.

Shelbyville has the week to prepare for a trip Saturday to Batesville (3-2).
