Defending shootout champs roll through semifinals

Class 4A, No. 7 Westfield defeats Lawrence Central Staff report Published: Saturday, December 28, 2013 8:05 AM US/eastern Class 4A, No. 7-ranked Westfield shook off a slow start Friday afternoon in the second game of the 2013 Shelby Shootout to rout Lawrence Central, 65-27. A quick start to the second quarter created separation for the Shamrocks (10-0), who extended an 11-7 advantage at the end of the first to 29-15 lead by halftime. The Bears (2-7) failed to make a field goal in the third quarter and were outscored 18-3. Allison VanDyke scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the fourth to keep Westfield unbeaten. * The defending Shelby Shootout champs advanced to face Shelbyville (4-8) in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. Indiana All-Star candidate Kayla Brown finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Westfield. VanDyke also had a game-high 10 rebounds. The Shamrocks hit seven three-pointers and shot 44 percent from the field. Lawrence Central was 9-of-42 from the field (21 percent). Kyra Tucker had 17 points to lead the Bears. Jasmine Shelt (six points) and Tyana Rogers (four) were the only other LC players to score. With the loss, Lawrence Central earned a consolation game date at 6 p.m. with Decatur Central (1-9). In the junior varsity semifinal game, Westfield held Lawrence Central scoreless in the first quarter and rolled to a 49-10 victory to advance to face Decatur Central in the Shelby Shootout championship game at 4:30 p.m. in William L. Garrett Gymnasium. Annaleise Drudge led the Shamrocks with 11 points. Paige Shockley added 10. Kierra Moore led Lawrence Central with six.
