Any thought the Shelbyville Lady Golden Bears had of celebrating Thanksgiving with an undefeated record disappeared in the second quarter against Columbus North Tuesday night at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

The visiting Lady Bull Dogs outscored Shelbyville 21-6, and that proved to be the difference in the game.

Columbus North went on to a 51-30 victory to improve to 3-0 on the young season, while Shelbyville fell to 2-1.

“Columbus North is a very strong opponent,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. “We knew they were going to be stronger than us. We knew we had to out-smart them and we didn’t do that.”

Shelbyville committed a season-high 27 turnovers and shot just 25 percent from the field. But, if not for such a poor eight-minute stretch, the outcome could have been different.

“Our first quarter, our defense looked good. Our offense didn’t look bad,” said Norris. “We just had a hard time putting the ball in the bucket and you could see the girls getting discouraged. When our offense is down, we can’t let our defense get down as well. And that’s the one thing I’m disappointed in. We just lost our heads in the second quarter.”

Shelbyville managed just one field goal in the first quarter – a Riley Achenbach 3-pointer – but only trailed 8-4 at the first break.

The Bull Dogs needed less than four minutes in the second quarter to double their first-quarter output. An 8-4 lead grew to 14-4, and eventually 20-6. Another 7-0 run made it 27-7 before Raven Hibbard hit a 3-pointer for Shelbyville.

Columbus North’s Quin Shoultz scored from the wing with four seconds left in the half to make it 29-10 at halftime.

“We didn’t execute the game plan the way we had designed,” said Norris. “We didn’t weather the storm enough that we gained the momentum. The first quarter was phenomenal. We told the girls if we played like that in the second quarter, we’d be fine.”

Shoultz just missed recording a double-double, with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Shelbyville scored twice to start the third quarter. Ashley Bush scored in the low post and a Chelsey Skipton drive and score cut the lead to 29-14. The lead fluctuated between 15 and 20 points the rest of the contest.

“The second half, I was pleased with our effort. We didn’t let up,” said Norris. “We didn’t give up.”

Columbus North freshman guard Ali Patberg had 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Tayler Goodall finished with 10 points and five steals.

Columbus North outrebounded Shelbyville, 35-28. More telling were the offensive rebounds. Columbus North won that category, 16-6.

Hibbard came off the bench to lead the Golden Bears with nine points and eight rebounds. The senior also had three assists and two steals while getting more playing time due to the second quarter injury to sophomore starting guard Riley Achenbach, who sat out the second half and wore a large bag of ice on her right knee after the game.

Skipton finished with seven points and six rebounds. Ashley Bush had four points and seven rebounds.

Shelbyville’s junior varsity team also suffered its first loss of the season. Columbus North won, 51-30.

Allyson Conner led Shelbyville (2-1) with 10 points. Megan Limecooly finished with seven.

Shelbyville opens its conference schedule Friday when Pendleton Heights (4-0, 1-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference) visits Garrett Gymnasium. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
