What a difference a game makes.

After turning the ball over 23 times and being held to 8-of-42 shooting from the field in a season opening loss at Yorktown, the Shelbyville High School girls' basketball team came out and played the style of basketball second-year coach Amanda Norris has been waiting for as the Lady Golden Bears cruised to a 47-32 win Tuesday over Greensburg. The win improves Shelbyville to 1-1 on the young season.

"We didn't play bad at Yorktown. I just thought we couldn't hit a shot. Tonight, our shots went in, we got defensive stops and our confidence was the difference maker. I want to give a shoutout to our sixth grade basketball team who sat behind our bench and really got us going. We fed off of their emotion," Norris said.

The feeding frenzy was crucial for the Lady Golden Bears, who found themselves trailing 3-2 early before going ahead 6-3 en route to both teams settling in for an 11-11 tie after the first quarter.

The second quarter and the play of Shelbyville senior forward Caitlin Mills proved to be the deciding factor.

In the eight-minute period, Mills scored 10 points, while Shelbyville, who shot 6-of-11 in the frame, held the visiting Lady Pirates to 1-of-9 shooting. The combination of Mills and a stingy defense paved the way for the Lady Golden Bears to build a 28-15 halftime advantage.

"The second quarter was crucial to us getting the win. Caitlin decided it was her time to take over, and I had no problem with watching her do that," Norris said.

Despite the halftime advantage, Shelbyville opened the third period sloppy, turning the ball over three consecutive times down the court as Greensburg began to cut into the Lady Golden Bears' lead. A three-pointer by Clare Owens, followed by a pair of baskets from Laura Welage forced Shelbyville to call a time out, holding onto a 32-23 advantage.

It would be as close as the Lady Pirates would get as Mills sank a pair of free throws, giving momentum back to Shelbyville.

"Getting a win this early is a breath of fresh air for us. The girls have been working so hard, all of them, and they absolutely deserve this," Norris said.

Shelbyville, however, will have little time to rest, as they travel to Shelby County foe Southwestern Saturday. A season ago, Southwestern defeated Shelbyville, and Norris knows her team will be in for a tough test.

"We need support at Southwestern. It is a hostile environment, and they are a tough team," Norris said.
