In one of the biggest games of the season in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, one of the smallest players was the difference.
Allisa Kirby, a 5-4 guard, scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to lead visiting Mt. Vernon past Class 3A No. 3 Shelbyville on Saturday.
The Evansville-bound Kirby helped the defending conference-champion Marauders erase a four-point halftime deficit with a 33-18 surge over the final two quarters.
Shelbyville (12-1, 5-1) has one conference game remaining. Mt. Vernon is 9-4, 4-0.
Sarah Laird scored 11 points for Golden Bears, who pulled ahead 17-15 after one quarter and led 31-27 at halftime. Mt. Vernon began taking over in the third quarter with a 17-11 run that put it up 44-42 going into the final period.
