No matter the outcome of the IHSAA’s 39th Annual Girls Basketball State Tournament, Shelbyville’s Riley Achenbach, Triton Central’s Sarah Rogian and Southwestern’s Annie Thomas and Oda Shackelford will go on to play basketball at the collegiate level.

For the rest of the seniors in Shelby County’s five basketball programs, the end of their basketball careers is near.

Shelbyville and Triton Central begin sectional tournaments tonight while Southwestern and Waldron join Morristown at the Bee Hive on Wednesday to kick off the quest for a state championship.

The smart money has Class A, No. 2 Southwestern returning to the Final Four for a third straight season, Triton Central playing for another regional championship and Shelbyville, Morristown and Waldron struggling against two of the state’s top teams in their respective classes.

Columbus North played in the 2012 state championship game, won a 2013 sectional title then was defeated by eventual state champion Bedford North Lawrence in the regional.

The talent is still there. The Bull Dogs have three Division I commitments including Notre Dame signee Ali Patberg.

Shelbyville’s 7-win season is as solid as it sounds. There just is not enough talent there to compete with Columbus North tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Prediction: Columbus North 73, Shelbyville 29

Sagarin prediction: Columbus North is favored by 43 points
