Shelbyville survived a frantic third quarter to hold off Southwestern, 52-40 Friday night at Southwestern.

The Lady Golden Bears, now 2-1 this season, have back-to-back wins for the first time since late in the 2007 season.

”These girls are working so hard,” said second-year Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. “With every win we get a little more buy in that hard work, determination and working on your weaknesses pays off.”

Shelbyville used a strong first-half performance to build a 17-point lead by halftime.

Southwestern (2-2) went quicker in the third quarter and sped up the pace of the game much to the disliking of the Golden Bears, who had just two field goals in the third quarter and more turnovers than in the entire first half.

”We stayed in that 2-3 zone in the first half to see if they could shoot it from the outside,” said Southwestern coach P.J. O’Malley, “and they did.

”We went to our trap in the second half and outhustled them. We should have never been down by 17.”

After a disjointed third quarter, Shelbyville rebounded in the fourth to get control of the game once again.

Eryn Hopper scored in the low post and hit a foul shot for a 3-point play. The senior forward followed that with another pair of free throws and the Golden Bears were back up 13 after seeing their lead slip to eight after three quarters.

”We haven’t been pressed too terribly bad yet and Southwestern has an Annie Thomas on their side, who is quick and relentless,” said Norris. “She has 24-hour energy, not five-hour energy. That helps them a lot. We haven’t seen anyone like that.”

Thomas, a freshman, finished with a team-high 10 points and eight steals. Whitley Thomas added nine points, but the Spartans struggled shooting from the field (10-of-50).

”We have to hit outside shots,” said O’Malley. “Teams are going to play zone on us until we start making some outside shots.”

Chelsey Skipton led a balanced Shelbyville attack with 11 points. Hopper finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Raven Hibbard hit a pair of 3s to finish with eight points. And Ashley Bush had seven.

”I have so much pride and joy to see our team play like this,” said Norris.

The Golden Bears outrebounded the Spartans 43-21.

Shelbyville’s junior varsity team improved to 3-0 this season with a 38-19 win at Southwestern.

Ashley Scudder led the Lady Golden Bears with eight points. Sky-Anne Krise and Riley Achenbach each had seven.

Haley Temple led Southwestern with eight points. Taylor Eversole scored seven.
