Thomas D. Hession, 73, of Shelbyville died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.

Born July 20, 1937, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Harry and Dee (Wall) Hession. He married Loita Chamness on Aug. 22, 1959, and she survives.

Other survivors include daughters, Jennie Hession of Bloomington, Ann Hession Alexander of Carmel; and grandchildren, Madeline and Bridget Alexander.

Mr. Hession graduated from Plainfield High School in 1955 and DePauw University in 1959. He received a master’s degree from Indiana University in 1966 and graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at the University of Delaware in 1985.

He taught and coached at Anderson Madison Heights and Columbus High schools before coming to Shelbyville High School in 1968, teaching government and economics. As head football coach from 1968 to 1978, he led the Golden Bears to its first-ever South Central Conference Championship in 1975 and was voted SCC Coach of the Year. He also served as president of the Indiana Football Coaches Association. He was head baseball coach at SHS from 1973 to 1984, and his team was regional runner-up in 1978-79 and conference champion in 1982-83, when he again was named Coach of the Year.

Mr. Hession served as the Shelby County Republican Club president, precinct committeeman and state convention delegate. From 1980 to 1988, he served as state senator for the 42nd District and in 1984 received the Sagamore of the Wabash designation from Governor Bob Orr.

He was the “Voice of the Golden Bears,” broadcasting SHS basketball games for more than 20 years on WSVL radio. He also announced Indianapolis Indians baseball games in 1966 and provided color commentary for high school basketball and football champion television coverage for 11 years.

Mr. Hession was very active in the Shelbyville community, serving on many boards and committees, including the Boys Club, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and the Blue River Community Foundation.

He was a lifetime member of Shelbyville First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for 25 years and served as a lay leader.

Mr. Hession was Shelbyville’s Citizen of the Year in 1996 and Shelby County’s Lifetime Citizen and Community Growth Award recipient in 2005. He was given a Shelbyville High School Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 in recognition of commitment and dedication to the school and the baseball program, and a baseball scholarship was established in his name. He also was inducted into the inaugural class of the Plainfield High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010.


Tom was a loving husband, father and granddad.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
