Despite competing in their 3rd race in 6 days, the La Mirada Cross Country teams showed fire in their running. The Varsity girls, led by Seniors Audrey Serrata (21:37) and Vanessa Thomas (21:38), cruised to victory over La Habra and California. The Lady Matadores scored an outstanding 16 points after placing their top 5 runners in the first six spots.

Sophomore Nathaniel Moore ran a brilliant race to take the top spot in the Varsity Boys race. The Matadores, despite placing their top 3 runners in the first five spots (Sophomores Jared Bird, 4th place, and Daniel Lee, 5th place), could not overcome the depth of a tight La Habra team and were defeated by a mere four points. La Mirada scored 36 points to California's 53 to come out 1-1 for the day.

In JV action, Sophomore Freddy Ramirez placed 2nd, while Junior Max Garnica and Freshman Ryan Holash placed 4th and 5th to earn Varsity uniforms. They lead their team to victory over California.

Success at Millikan Invitational! MI040

The Matadores scored big this Saturday at the Millikan Invitational run at Heartwell Park in Long Beach. Of the thirty-three athletes who participated, twenty-three earned a PR and eighteen earned medals. Freshman Destinie Martin started the trend with a hard-fought 3rd place finish in the girls freshman race. Soon after, in the senior girls race, Vanessa Thomas once again led the way as her team finished in 2nd place overall. Just as the sun appeared, the boys sophomore team, led by Nathaniel Moore's 5th place finish, raced to the top in their race. To round out the day, the senior boys placed 4th and the sophomore girls placed 5th. Great job everybody! Check out all the results at 2002 race results.

La Mirada Wins Season Opener

La Mirada Wins Season Opener

WHS021WHS022

Five Matador Cross Country teams achieved victory in their first dual meet of the season against Whittier High School. The Boys Varsity, lead by Nathaniel Moore, defeated the Cardinals 20 - 38. Rounding out the top seven were Sophomores Daniel Lee, and Jared Bird, Senior Ben Ramirez, Sophomores Jake Cooley and Freddy Ramirez, and Senior Mario Perez.

The Girls Varsity dominated Whittier by a score of 20 - 41. Senior Vanessa Thomas placed 2nd overall as the Matadores #1 runner. As is becoming a La Mirada tradition, the top 5 runners were separated by a mere 32 seconds. Finishing in the top seven spots on this day were Junior Amanda Stephens, Senior Audrey Serrata, Sophomore Ana Poblet, Junior Jackie Martinez, Senior Cynthia Mata, and Sophomore Megan Burbidge.

On the JV side, the Boys team won by default since Whittier HS wasn't able to field a full team. Leading the way was Dag Tesfaye. The Girls JV team was also victorious by default due to the Cardinal's lack of depth.

Sophomore Kevin Osborn earned a Varsity uniform after finishing as the Matadores #9 man overall. He lead the Frosh-Soph team to victory with a time of 19:43 . . . a new PR for Kevin!
