News and Announcements

Running against both La Serna and La Habra last Thursday, the Matadores were on unfamiliar territory. In addition to the heat and humidity, they were on a flat, concrete-laden course with construction causing slight changes in terrain throughout the 3 miles.

In the girl's race, Stephanie Felix, Melissa Byrd, and Lauren McIntyre were the sole varsity athletes participating. For the first half of the race they ran stride for stride with La Serna's Sandrine Urias, a state finalist last fall, before Stephanie decided to pull away. The slippery footing caught Felix by surprise as she lost her footing and fell to the ground around a sharp turn. Getting up, she maintained her narrow lead all the way to the finish. At the end of the day, the Lady Mats went home with a one point advantage over La Serna and a slightly bigger gap over La Habra. Rookies Carly Clase and Kristin Lechuga were the 4th and 5th scorers for the girls and provided the narrow margin. Andrea Landeros and Vanessa Conchas completed their first races of the season. For her efforts, Carly was named La Mirada's "Athlete of the Meet."

In the second race, only Michael Palmer, Dennis Ly, and Mark Gillaspy wore the Matadores varsity uniforms. They were unable to match the girls results as they came up short against both La Serna and La Habra. Dennis started the race with at a breakneck pace before he backed off jut before the first mile. Palmer took over and finished as the first scorer for the Matadores, followed by Ly and Gillaspy, who once again completed the 3-mile course within seconds of one another. Regan Garcia and Mateo Cordova were the 4th and 5th scorers for the team. Jorge Medrano completed his first race as a Matadore. Enrique Nava and Cordova were named La Mirada's "Athletes of the Meet."

Mixed results at Long Beach Invitational

(Meet website)
Depending on your point of view, this year's Long Beach Invite was either the best place for the Matadores to begin the 2007 season, or the worst. Unlike previous years, the first big invitational of the season revealed some weaknesses on both the boys and the girl's varsity teams.

In 2005, the Lady Mats team time at Long Beach was 1:41:06, the sophomore squad placed 3rd, and Stephanie's time of 18:15 was the fastest of the day. This year the girl's team time was 1:39:19, they were overall the 6th fastest team at the meet, and Stephanie again ran the fastest time of the day. Unfortunately, the girls got on the bus feeling like they did not live up to their expectations or goals. They realized that a scoring punch dominated by the numbers 1, 2, 3 runners combined with a 3:52 gap between the 1st and 5th runner denied them a chance for a top three spot. In fact, they were less than a second behind the 5th place team! Hopefully the lack of depth won't come back to haunt them later in the season. Running by grade level, the girls were led by senior Stephanie Felix and junior Melissa Byrd who finished first and second in their respective races. Third scorer for the Matadores at Long Beach was freshman Ashley Casanover, who's perfect attendance this summer showed why consistent training is so important to a successful fall season. Ashley led a group of six rookies in the first girl's race of the day. Tatiana Cortes, with a strong PR, was the sole Lady Mat to add a varsity uniform to her wardrobe.

This year's boys team has worked diligently all summer and has made a strong climb from the 2005 season when they placed a distant 4th in league competition. Still, they were able to place only one Matadore under 17 minutes and were over a minute slower than the pace-setting 2002 team. This year's contingent was led by junior Andrew Garza, who is still nursing a strained hip. He was followed by seniors Mark Gillaspy and Dennis Ly, who were both clocked at 17:04 -- PRs for both. Dennis, who was tripped and lost his shoe during the first mile, ran the majority of the race with bare feet. Fortunately he suffered only a blister and will be ready for the next race. Newcomer Brett Berger earned his varsity stripes at the meet and sophomores Richard Marquez and Andrew Herrick weaved through the large sophomore pack to earn PRs. The second pack -- Brett, Richard and Andrew -- is rapidly closing the gap on the leaders and they all hope to soon be clocking times in the 17 minute range.

Matadores JV athletes fared well at the invitational and made a strong case for moving up to the varsity level. On the girls side, Lillian Mignella and Serena Kirton pushed the pace and just missed qualifying for a varsity uniform. Since camp, 14 girls and 6 boys have joined the team . The newcomers are rapidly moving up the ladder of success and are almost prepared to train and race with the rest of the team. Racing this week were Clarissa Cabrera, Marina Whitfield, Vanessa Conchas, Mabel Velasco, Aja Labasan and Regan Garcia. Aja and Regan went out strong and were the fastest rookies of the day.

La Mirada "Athletes of the Meet" were Tatiana Cortes and Dennis Ly. The Matadores harriers face La Serna and La Habra this Thursday at La Habra High School.

Record-Setting Day at Annual Time Trial!

Posted by Ralph Casas at Aug 31, 2007 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Over the years, the Labor Day weekend Time Trial has become more of an excuse to celebrate the end of summer than a true indicator of the Cross Country teams' capabilities. In fact, some years many of the strongest athletes do not participate. A new era has begun with the onset of the 2007 season: Success! Showing the benefits of a summer training plan that added total body strength as it decreased their miles, the Matadores harriers ignored the stifling heat and humidity as they looked fitter and faster than ever. Remarkably, for many of the athletes, the time trial marked the first real opportunity they've had this summer to stretch out their new and improved strides and race.

The girls were led on their 3-mile quest by Dream Team "Runner of the Year" Stephanie Felix, and a front pack that consisted of Melissa Byrd, Lauren McIntyre, rookie Ashley Casanover, and Sarah Jeon, all of whom earned their varsity uniform. Right behind them and narrowly missing the time standard needed to earn a coveted top seven spot, were Tatiana Cortes and Lillian Mignella. Both Lillian and Tatiana ran the best races of their careers and earned PRs on the hilly 3-mile course. Tatiana's time was faster and Lillian's time was as fast as last year's #1 runner at the time trial. But the real surprise developed in the back of the pack as rookies Serena Kirton, Monica Ramirez, Kristen Lechuga, and Carly Clase all performed better than last year's entire JV team! And, in a real nice development, Serena, this season's 8th scorer for the Lady Mats, was faster than last year's #2: Jenna Pasillas! In the course of the trial, Stephanie set a new Time Trial course record and the girls set a new Time Trial team time record with a team time FASTER than the 2005 team's run at Cluster Meet #2. Besides Tatiana and Lillian, Sarah and Lauren also earned PRs on the course. With Clarissa Negrete, Karina Gonzalez, Bianca Ceballos, Erica Campos, and Daisey Terriquez recuperating from too much summer, and 22 new freshmen joining the team, the Lady Mats look forward to a bright and successful season!

Still, for as strong as the girls looked, the boys climbed even further up the ladder of success. It's not uncommon for the 4th runner to step up at the start of the season, but Michael Palmer made his teammates wonder whether he's been holding back or just getting in shape. With a 20 second gap on Dennis Ly, Palmer, who narrowly missed Nate Moore's Time Trial record, quietly made a statement to the entire team: it's our time! Right behind Dennis were Mark Gillaspy and Andrew Garza. This represents the first time ever that the Matadores have placed their top 4 runners at 18 minutes or under at a time trial. Andrew Herrick and Richard Marquez rounded out the top six and also earned varsity uniforms. Together, the boys team time earned them the right to claim the title: "Fastest Team Time" -- albeit only for the Time Trial. Mateo Cordova, Miguel Franco, and Enrique Nava were the next veterans to cross the finish line, joined by rookies Ragan Garcia and Frankie Nogales. Newcomer Nick Meek, in his first week of training, was escorted across the finish line by his entire team. All-in-all it was a success-filled day with awards, accolades, and team records all around.
