Girls Earn Back-to-Back Titles

The undefeated Girl’s varsity team (16 - 0), led by senior Audrey Serrata (20:27), placed 4 runners in the top ten as they scored 40 points and captured back-to-back Suburban League titles.  The girls team—league champions in 1986, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001—struggled to keep pace with the front runners in league this season, but was deep enough to come away with the league title.  For a brief moment before ascending Poop-out Hill, Audrey challenged defending league champion, Lynette Thompson, but fell behind on the back side of Reservoir Hill, where she was passed by Elvira Del Castillo from Norwalk High School. Vanessa Thomas, who made a gallant effort to keep pace with the front pack, was La Mirada’s number 2 runner for the day. Joining Audrey and Vanessa on this year’s varsity team are: Amanda Stephens, Ana Poblet, Jennifer Minero, Jackie Martinez and Cynthia Mata. Freshman, Destinie Martin will join the team for the CIF-SS prelims.

This is the 17th consecutive year the Lady Mats have advanced to the CIF-SS prelims. The Girls have an astounding 55 - 5 record (.916) in league over the last 5 years. Since 1993—a period of 10 seasons—the lady Mats have accumulated 101 wins against only 9 losses (.918) in Suburban League competition. Well done!

The J.V. girls, paced by sophomore Kendal Van Wuyckhuyse (22:28), produced their 4th league title in a row by capturing the top five spots in their race and earning an invincible 15 points! Finishing second through fifth and earning medals were Megan Burbidge, Sonia Linares, Jackie Serrata, and Marlene Guerrero. Megan and Kendal will join the varsity team for CIF competition.

Boys Earn Another Trip to CIF-SS Prelims

In 2nd place going into the race, Dag Tesfaye (16:56) and NathanielMoore (17:27) led the boys team to a 2nd place finish in Suburban League with an overall record of 10 - 2. The boys achieved their goal of qualifying for the CIF-SS championship series for the 2nd consecutive season. In a hard fought race, the La Mirada team, in back of the pack at the end of the first mile, came from behind and beat Glenn by 2 points. A strong finish by freshman Ryan Holash and sophomores Jared Bird and Jake Cooley, secured second place for the Matadores. The varsity seven also includes seniors Ben Ramirez and Mario Perez.

Racing alone in the Boys J.V. race, senior Sergio Meza clinched a first place medal. The Frosh-Soph boys, paced by Kevin Osborn and Freddy Ramirez, were able to secure 2nd place in their race. Freddy and Sergio will join the varsity team for CIF competition.
