The Lady Mats had 6 "All League" Medal Recipients:
Sonia, Ana, Erica, Karina, Adele & Destinie

The undefeated Girl’s varsity team (12 - 0), led by seniors Sonia Linares (20:38) & Ana Poblet (20:44) placed 6 runners in the top ten as they scored 26 points and captured their fourth consecutive Suburban League title. The girls team—league champions in 1986, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002 & 2003—had no trouble keeping pace with the front runners in league this season at the 3 league cluster meets. The big difference this day was their ability to sustain a tight pack for the entire race as the final gap between the first and fifth runners was only 38 seconds (first to sixth was 44 seconds).

For a brief moment in the loop, the entire La Mirada team found themselves running from behind as the seven Cerritos Girls went out in front. Solid team leadership by Linares and Poblet kept the girls focused and under control as they eventually caught and passed the front pack just after the first mile. By the time the teams entered the switchbacks, Erica Sandoval was in first place with Sonia and Norwalk's Jessica Cos right behind. Immediately behind them, Poblet led Destinie Martin, Adele Mata & Karina Gonzalez past the Cerritos seven by the time the girls entered the runway. For a brief moment before ascending Poop-out Hill, Sonia was able to challenge league champion, Jessica Cos, but sprained an already tender ankle and fell behind on the back side of Reservoir Hill. Ana Poblet, who made a gallant effort to keep pace with the front pack, barely held off Victoria Cerda of Cerritos to finish in 3rd place. Despite an early lead, Erica struggled to hold on to 6th place. She was attended to by paramedics after the race and given a clean bill of health.

Jenna Pasillas, JV league champ, and Clarissa Negrete will join the team as they make their 19th consecutive trip to the CIF-SS prelims on November 13th. The girls, undefeated in League for four consecutive seasons (48 - 0) own a record of 109 wins against only 5 losses over the last 10 seasons and have earned the Suburban League crown for 8 out of the past 10 years.

The J.V. girls, paced by sophomore Jenna Pasillas (22:33), had their consecutive title streak snapped at five as they finished in 2nd place, only 9 points behind Cerritos.

Boys Earn Another Trip to CIF-SS Prelims

Boys "All League" Medal Recipients:
Jared Bird, Nathaniel Moore & Andrew Diaz

The Varsity Boys had their dreams of a league title smashed by the depth of Norwalk's starting seven. In 2nd place after the first two league cluster meets, they knew going into the race that only an exceptional effort from the starting seven would earn first place. The boy's primary goal for the day was to place the top 3 runners in the top 6. It wasn't to be, as only Jared Bird (16:25, 2nd place) and Nathaniel Moore (17:03, 6th place) were able to run with the top 3 Norwalk runners. Andrew Diaz (17:11) struggled to equal his performance at the Mt. SAC Invitational as the boys team earned their 3rd consecutive 2nd place finish at Suburban League Finals with an overall record of 10 - 2. In a hard fought race, Jared and Freshman David Gonzales were able to keep pace with the front pack for the opening mile. Jared moved out in front and established a slight lead over Eddie Perez of Norwalk High School coming off the switchbacks, but fell into 2nd place after poop-out. The boys achieved their goal of qualifying for the CIF-SS championship series for the 4th consecutive season. The varsity seven also includes seniors Jarod Winn, Kevin Osborn and Freddy Ramirez. Jim Palmer and Sean O'Donnell will join the varsity team for CIF competition.
