Girls Race to Victory; Boys Split The Day

CN012CN020

Seeking to retain the Suburban League title for another year, the Lady Mats opened the season with a 15 to 41 victory over Cerritos and a 19 to 41 win over Norwalk at La Mirada Regional Park this week. In a hard fought battle with Elvira Del Castillo, Audrey Serrata pulled away at the 2.5-mile mark to finish the 3.1-mile course in 20:47. Audrey was followed by Destinie Martin (3rd place), Ana Poblet (4th place), Vanessa Thomas (5th place) and Jackie Martinez (6th place). The La Mirada girls J.V. team also prevailed over both Norwalk and Cerritos.

In the boys race, Sophomores Jared Bird and Daniel Lee executed their races to perfection but were unable to hold off a veteran Norwalk team that placed their top four runners ahead of the Matadores to win 22 to 35. The boys did cruise to victory over Cerritos by a score of 16 to 43. The boy’s Frosh-Soph team defeated Cerritos, 26-29 but also fell to Norwalk, 27-32. Congratulations to Ryan Holash on his 1st place finish! Next week the Matadores face Glenn and Artesia High Schools at La Mirada Regional Park.
