Bedford Crushes Westford in Season Opener -- 6-0

Posted by Dale Dubois on Sep 08 2002 at 05:00PM PDT
The Bedford Pacers sent a shock wave through division 2 with a 6-0 pasting of the Westford FC yesterday morning. It was certain that Westford expected an easier game against the Bedford squad, who had moved up into division 2 this spring. However, Bedford came out to win from the opening kick off. The Pacers took control of the game and never gave it up. Playing as if they had not taken any summer break, Bedford would get on the board early. John Guild would finish a rebound shot from Jon Cloutier and it would be all that the Pacers would need in this match. Shortly after, Jeff Bailey, last seasons leading scorer would tally one of his two on the day. The Pacers kept the pressure on in the 90 degree heat and were the better fit team. Rob Easton would crank a shot from midfield that froze the keeper on his line for a moment. He would then come out to short hop the ball but it was too late and it would bound over his head to put Bedford up 3-0 at the half. Westford, in an effort not to be embarrassed, would come out strong in the opening minutes of the second half. The Pacers new keeper, Carlos Del Carpio, would shut down the attempts. Then on a quick counter down the left side, Jeff Guild would feed Jeff Bailey in the middle. Jeff Bailey would beat his defender and the keeper with a low hard blast that would slam the door on the Westford drive. The Pacers continued solid play for the remainder. Colm Saunders would tack on a goal, as he would take a beautiful flick from Jon Cloutier and beat the keeper to the far post. This put Bedford up 5-0. Westford would try to spoil the shut out, but it was not to be, as Carlos would pull one off his goal line in the final minutes. Johnnie Guild would finish as he started registering his second goal on the day to finish the game at 6-0. The Pacers played very well. However, this is Division 2 and they will not all come this easy. Bedford has their home opener next Sunday at 9 AM at Legacy field against the Wakefield Bulldogs. Come early for good seats. Team note: Wakefield is Red so bring a white shirt also. Please be at the field at 8:30 AM.
