Wakefield Edges Bedford 3-2 in a Tough Battle

Posted by Dale Dubois on Sep 15 2002 at 05:00PM PDT
The Wakefied Bulldogs pulled out a 3-2 victory in the closing minutes of yesterdays match with the Bedford Pacers at Legacy. In a well played match on both sides, Bedford proved that they certainly can contend in Division 2. Bedford actually controlled the play for most of the game, but allowed two weak goals. A good leason learned - Defensive lapse do not go unpunished at this level of play. Bedford would come out strong from the start, knocking the ball around and possessing the ball. Both teams had their chances early on. Carlos would make a diving save to his left to keed the game scoreless. Then on a quick counter, Rob Easton(two games and no yellows) would send a through ball to a breaking Jeff Guild, who would beat the Bulldog keeper and put Bedford up 1-0. This was short lived, as a miss kick in the Pacer's area would result in the equallizer and half time. In the second half Wakefield would capitalize on another Pacer miscue and take the lead. The Pacers would battle for most of the remaining half, but could not get through the tough Bulldog defenders. With about 5 minutes to play, Bedford put on the preasure. Peter Cline would battle his way into the corner on the left side. He would beat a defernder and hit a far post shot. Scott Sharby would intercept the shot and volley it towards the near post. This would catch the Wakefield keeper going the wrong way and the ball would find the back of the net tying the score at two. Bedford was content counting their one point, as Wakefield would counter. The Bulldog midfielder would take the ball down the right side beating the Pacer defender. He would then hit a perfect cross to a diving striker who would head it in. A beautiful goal and a victory for Wakefield a disappointing loss for the Pacers. Bedford remains at home for their next game against the division leading North Andover Hotspurs. This sould prove to be a very tough match for the Pacer club. Game time 9 AM Sunday September 22.
