by Keith S. Cavanaugh Terripian Times December 13, 2003 Wow, what a game it was tonight as Good Counsel and James Gist squared off with Spalding and Rudy Gay in the Bullis Tournament in Potomac. But there was a slight setback, though, as James Gist was injured in the final minutes of a highlight-reel showdown between the DC area's top players. Spalding won the game, 56-46, but it was a close game before Gist went down with a calf injury in the final four minutes. He and Gay battled all night with both getting 'theirs,' but while Gist was on Gay he held the super senior forward to 5 of 16 shooting from the field in a fierce battle. Gay would go on to score a flurry of points in the final minutes with Gist injured, finishing with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks in a strong all-around performance, while Gist had 11 points, 13 boards, 2 blocks and 2 assists before exiting the game. Afterwards, he was icing the calf and walking with crutches but hopefully it is nothing serious. Anyhow, it was a barn-burner with both athletes going back and forth and displaying why they are the best prep talents in the area. Just the thought of both on the same court at Maryland, if it had happened, wow... Anyhow, many wrote off Good Counsel and its inexperienced backcourt before the game tipped off, so it was a heck of showing despite it all. Gay and Gist clashed most of the game, with Gay coming out on top with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Gist had 11 points and nine rebounds before leaving the game due to a calf injury with about three minutes left in the game.
