LA COSTA CANYON VERSUS RANCHO BERNARDO IN CIF OPEN DIVISION SEMIFINALS
Rancho Bernardo defeated Mira Mesa 12-3 in the Saturday elimination game to advance to the semifinals out of the loser's bracket.
The No: 1 Seed Rancho Bernardo (29-4) gets the home field advantage as the No: 4 Seed La Costa Canyon (20-11) travels to Rancho Bernardo on Tuesday for the 3:30 pm game. In the event that Rancho Bernardo (with one loss) beats La Costa Canyon (which has no losses) on Tuesday, the two teams would play again on Thursday at Rancho Bernardo, with the winner advancing to the Saturday Championship Game at the University of San Diego.
In the other Saturday elimination game, Cathedral Catholic (25-6) edged Vista 3-2 to earn a rematch on Tuesday against Granite Hills (24-7) at Granite Hills.
The 2014 Mavericks are still a comparatively young squad but they are no longer inexperienced. The Mavericks lost three of their first five games of the year in the tough Hill Top Tournament, loosing to Rancho Bernardo 3-4, Cathedral Catholic 2-3 and Granite Hills 0-3. The Mavericks finished strong by sweeping through the tough Avocado West League with a 9-4 record to win their third Avocado West League Championship in the last four years.
This will be the first CIF matchup between Rancho Bernardo and La Costa Canyon since the Mavericks beat the Broncos, 7-6 in ten innings to win the CIF 2012 Division II Championship.
MAVERICKS CLOBBER MIRA MESA 10 - 1
La Costa Canyon scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and then cruised to a 10 - 1 win over Mira Mesa. Senior Cameron Harrison (8-2) pitched the complete game for the Mavericks.
Mira Mesa (10-20) drops into the elimination game on Saturday May 31st at Rancho Bernardo (29-4) at 11:00 am.
La Costa Canyon (20-11) advances to the Tuesday afternoon game on June 3rd against the winner of the Saturday elimination game between Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo. The location of the Tues game is at the higher seed, which means if No. 1 Rancho Bernardo (29-4) wins on Sat. the No. 4 Mavericks will travel to Rancho Bernardo on Tuesday.
In the other half of the brackets Granite Hills sophomore Dillan Shrum hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Cathedral Catholic 3-2. The Eagles Jayson Rose pitched a complete game four hitter for the win. The Dons Brady Aikens struck out 13 and allowed only one earned run on four hits through six innings but he was not around at the end.
No. 2 Seeded Granite Hills (24-7) advances to the Tuesday game at Granite Hills High against the winner of the Vista v Cathedral Catholic Saturday elimination game.
Vista (18-14) beat district rival Rancho Buena Vista 6-3 to advance to the Saturday elimination game at No. 3 Seeded Cathedral Catholic (24-6) at 11:00 am.
Note: El Camino beat La Jolla 7-2 to advance in the Div II Playoffs.
MAVERICKS POUND CARLSBAD 9 - 3
The Mavericks broke out the bats to beat Carlsbad 9 - 3 in the first round of the CIF Open Division Playoffs.
The Mavericks will host Mira Mesa on Friday at 3:30 pm at La Costa Canyon High as Mira Mesa jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then hung on to upset Rancho Bernardo 5-4.
Granite Hills took care of Rancho Buena Vista 9 - 2;
Cathedral Catholic edged Vista 8 - 6 as the Dons saved Brady Aiken for the No. 2 seeded Granite Hills.

Carlsbad (20-11) at Rancho Bernardo (28-4) at 3:30 pm.

Note: In Division II Play, El Camino edged West Hills 1 - 0.
