Mavs Come From Behind to Open League

The Mavericks came from six runs down to beat visiting Mt. Carmel yesterday 7-6. The Sundeveils started the scoring in the third, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 lead. They continued in the fourth scoring two more on three hits to extend their lead to 6-0. In the bottom half of the fourth the Mavericks battled back scoring six runs on five hits highlighted by doubles by Derek VanLeeuwen and Brett St. Amour. In the bottom half of the fifth the Mavericks answered again when Cole Duccey (3-3) lead off with a single, moved to second on a single by Grant Allgire and scored on a base hit by Mike Ramirez to take a 7-6 lead. Chris Brookey who relieved Voaklander pitched 3 1/3 perfect innings to earn his first varsiy victory. The win moves the Mavericks record to 11-5 and 1-0 in league play. They will play again on Thursday at Torrey Pines 3:30.
