LA COSTA CANYON VERSUS RANCHO BERNARDO IN CIF OPEN DIVISION SEMIFINALS

Posted by Ruth Stoffel on May 31 2014 at 05:00PM PDT

Rancho Bernardo defeated Mira Mesa 12-3 in the Saturday elimination game to advance to the semifinals out of the loser's bracket.

The No: 1 Seed Rancho Bernardo (29-4) gets the home field advantage as the No: 4 Seed La Costa Canyon (20-11) travels to Rancho Bernardo on Tuesday for the 3:30 pm game. In the event that Rancho Bernardo (with one loss) beats La Costa Canyon (which has no losses) on Tuesday, the two teams would play again on Thursday at Rancho Bernardo, with the winner advancing to the Saturday Championship Game at the University of San Diego.

In the other Saturday elimination game, Cathedral Catholic (25-6) edged Vista 3-2 to earn a rematch on Tuesday against Granite Hills (24-7) at Granite Hills.

The 2014 Mavericks are still a comparatively young squad but they are no longer inexperienced.  The Mavericks lost three of their first five games of the year in the tough Hill Top Tournament, loosing to Rancho Bernardo 3-4, Cathedral Catholic 2-3 and Granite Hills 0-3. The Mavericks finished strong by sweeping through the tough Avocado West League with a 9-4 record to win their third Avocado West League Championship in the last four years.

This will be the first CIF matchup between Rancho Bernardo and La Costa Canyon since the Mavericks beat the Broncos, 7-6 in ten innings to win the CIF 2012 Division II Championship.
