LA COSTA CANYON HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

The Mavericks opened the 2003 Lions Tournament with a convincing victory over the Morse Tigers at Morse High School. Paced by some clutch hitting the Mavericks pounded out 12 hits and 12 runs while not committing an error. Michael Kenney remained a strong force on the mound by facing the minimum through five innings. He allowed two hits but erased both runners by pickoff and a 5-4-3 double play. Travis Goldbach relieved Kenney in the 6th and struck out the side. The Mavericks were led offensively by Joey Burke 2-3 (double, triple, 3 rbi's), Michael Scharbarth 2-4 (HR, single, 3 rbi's), and Scott Clement 3-4 (2 singles, HR). Scharbarth started the scoring with a home run down the left field line. The Mavericks got two more in the fifth when Clement came to the plate. Clement led off the sixth inning with a mammoth blast into the left field parking lot. The Mavericks are now 1-0 in the Classic Division of the Lions Tournament and 13-1 overall.
