2004 MAVERICKS WIN SECOND CIF CHAMPIONSHIP

Posted by Ruth Stoffel on Jun 05 2004 at 05:00PM PDT
The Mavericks rallied in the top of the eighth inning on Nick Burke's three run home run to beat Fallbrook 7-4. In 2003 Nick contributed the "catch", a diving all out stretch to catch a line drive against Eastlake in a 2-1 semi-final win. In 2004 it was his bat and his arm in the Championship game as he went 3 for 4, with two runs scored, three runs batted in and threw out a runner at home from his center field position. Wes Schiller started for the Mavericks and struggled in the first two innings giving up four earned runs, before settling in to hold the line for the next three innings. Wes finished with 5 innings, yielding 10 hits, striking out 4, walking 4 and leaving the game whith his team in a 4-4 tie and in a great position to win. In the top of the 3rd inning the Mavericks scored one run on three consecutive two out singles with Scott Clement knocking in Nick Burke. In the top of the 4th inning the Mavericks tied the game at 4 all with a throwing error that allowed Jimmy Pierce to score and then rbi singles by Travis Jones and Kevin Patterson to tie the game. After having pitched 7 innings on Tuesday, Doug Konoske entered the game in relief in the bottom of the 6th inning. Doug allowed no runs, walked 1 and struck out 5 in shutting out the Warriors over the last three innings. Burke's three run home run with one out in the the top of the eighth inning also scored Brian Ernst and Kyle Musella. It was timely as Konoske had only one inning of eligibility left and he shut out the Warriors in the bottom half of the eighth to preserve the second consecutive extra inning CIF Championship win for the Mavericks. Fallbrook pounded out 11 hits and left 12 runners on base but the final power ranking in Home Runs was: La Costa Canyon 1 Fallbrook 0.
