Nationals Sweep Oshkosh Giants

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 21, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Nationals fathers in southeastern Wisconsin glowed with pride as their boys honored them with not one, but two, Wisconsin State League victories Sunday over Oshkosh by scores of 4-3 and 12-1.

Game one was a tight back-and-forth affair.   The Nationals posted the games first tally in inning one on an RBI double by Matt Richer.   The Giants responded with runs of their own in the fourth and sixth innings to take the lead.   Shey Smith responded with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score, but Oshkosh came right back with a run in the seventh to take back the lead.   Not to be outdone, Kyle Kalkopf singled up the middle to score Nick Lingvay in the Nationals half of the inning to knot the game again at 3-3.

After reliever Tyler Frohwirth held the Giants scoreless in the eighth, the Nationals took advantage of an Oshkosh error that allowed Matt Richer to reach.  Three batters later Shey Smith plated him to secure a hard-fought 4-3 victory.

Game two played out differently.   The Nationals took advantage of the Oshkosh pitcher's early wildness to jump to a 5-0 first inning lead and never looked back.   Offensive contributions came throughout the lineup; Shey Smith led the way with 3 RBI's.   Nick Schmiddlekofer, Nick Lingvay, and Curt Pryal added two each.  Chad Tindall earned the complete game victory, striking out 5 and walking none.

Next up for the Nationals are the Kenosha Kings in a Langsdorf Nite League and Wisconsin State League contest and Harvey Kuenn Field at Rainbow Park in West Allis on Thursday June 25 at 7:30pm.

Nats Down Sheboygan

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 18, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Nationals were finally back on the field Thursday night after games lost due to weather.   Though not exceptionally sharp offensively, the team was efficient in capitalizing on scoring opportunities in a 5-3 win over the Sheboygan A's.    The victory left the Nationals atop the Wisconsin State League's North Division at 4-1 as well as the Langsdorf Nite League at 6-2.    Sheboygan dropped to 4-6 and 3-3 respectively.

Sheboygan got on the board first with a run in the second but the Nationals matched that on an RBI double by Curt Pryal.   The Nationals pushed across three more in the third inning on Nick Lingvay's bases loaded walk and Adam Karas' two out, two run RBI single.   A run in the sixth closed the scoring for the Nationals.   Kyle Kalkopf singled home Nick Lingvay with two outs.

Cody Griebling made his first start on the mound for the Nationals, going 7 strong innings and striking out 7 to earn the win.   Tyler Frohwirth threw the final two frames for the save.

Next up for the Nationals are important Wisconsin State League North Division games versus the Oshkosh Giants.  The two teams will square off on Sunday for a DH at Aaron Field in Milwaukee.  First pitch is set for 1pm.

Pewaukee Downs Nationals

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 10, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Pewaukee jumped to an early 4-0 lead and withstood a number of Nationals comeback attempts en route to a 7-5 victory Wednesday night at Harvey Kuenn Field in West Allis.   The victory upped the Muskies Nite League record to 2-2; the Nationals fell to 5-2.

Despite a number of well hit balls, the Nationals were held to 5 hits on the night.  Key blows included Brian Huntzinger's 2 out RBI single in the second to put the Nationals on the board, and Jimmy Jungbauer and Paul Archambault's RBI singles in a 2 run sixth that narrowed the deficit to 7-5.

Curt Pryal went the first 4 plus innings and took the loss.   The Nationals bullpen on Tom Starck, Tyler Frohwirth, and Cody Griebling limited the Muskies to 3 hits and two unearned runs the rest of the way, striking out 7.

Next up for the Nationals are the Addison Braves in a Wisconsin State League matchup on Sunday.  The teams will play a DH at Kuenn Field.  First game begins at 2pm.

The West Allis Nationals used an 8 run second inning to distance themselves from Pewaukee on Thursday night en route to an 8-3 Langsdorf Nite League victory.   The win left the Nationals atop the Nite League witha 5-1 record.   Pewaukee slipped to 1-3 in the standings.

Starting pitcher Joseph Wagner showed some rust in his season and Nationals debut, walking 4 and giving up three runs in the first inning.   However he settled in and followed that start with two scoreless frames.

Bob Herrick pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win of the season.

Brian Huntzinger led the offense with a bases clearing double that put the Nationals ahead for good at 5-3. Drew Worth added 2 hits and 2 runs; Nick Lingvay contributed an RBI single and double.

The Nationals have a break until next Wednesday when they face Pewaukee again.   Game will be played at Kuenn Field in Rainbow Park.  First pitch is set for 7:30pm.

The Natties turned the page quickly on a sour performance in Sheboygan Tuesday night, downing the West Bend 7Up 15 -5 in an important Wisconsin State League/Langsdorf Nite League divisional contest.

The game shaped up early to be a low scoring pitchers duel, with West Bend starting Tyler Thicke and West Allis starting Jimmy Jungbauer.

That changed quickly, though, as West Bend's defensive lapses allowed West Allis to score 4 unearned runs in the second inning.   Compounding the early hole was the fact the Thicke's pitch count climbed quickly and he was forced to exit after only 4 innings of work.

The Nats added 3 more in the fifth and the team entered the latter innings with a comfortable 8-1 lead.

West Bend wouldn't go easily, however.   Jungbauer appeared to be in cruise control after getting a popout to start the bottom half of the 7th, but West Bend took advantage of some inopportune wildness and a couple of well placed knocks to post four runs and draw back to 8-5.

West Allis responded with 3 runs in the eighth and 4 in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Jungbauer earned the win with 7 strong innings and 10 strikeouts.  Newcomer Drew Worth shut the door, striking out 6 in the final two innings.

Curt Pryal led the offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI's.  Chad Tindall reached base 5 times and scored 3 runs.

Next up are the Pewaukee Muskies in Langdorf Nite League Action on Thursday at Kuenn Field at Rainbow Park in West Allis.  First Pitch is set for 7:30pm.
