Hot Stove Report: December 15, 2007

While the Nationals were unable to make any deals at last week's Winter Meetings in Nashville, it wasn't for a lack of trying.

Nationals GM, 25,  had multiple monologues with Twins about their prized lefty, Johan Santana.   However, the sides weren't able to come to terms on a trade.

"Since we have some depth up the middle, I discussed the possibility of moving one of our infielders to help them replace Bartlett along with three top prospects," said 25.   "They were looking for Arnold and my son in the package so talks broke down.   From a salary standpoint, it made sense.  But from a baseball standpoint we felt that we'd be giving up too much."

Rumors continue to surface about the Nationals' interest in Sal Fasano.  The free agent catcher remains on the market and would surely fill one of the team's biggest needs.   "We'd like to get Pryal back on the hill more, and the addition of Fasano would allow us to do that.    More importantly, the guy has the best mustache in baseball and his ornery temperment would help our kids a lot."
