Laura Careless, Juilliard Guest Artist Visit

We were thrilled to have Laura Careless, our Juilliard Guest Artist visit WPS today. Laura worked performed for and shared her passion for dance with dance Middle and High School Dance Students.

Laura Careless is a UK-born, New York-based performing artist specializing in storytelling through dance and movement. She is a graduate of The Royal Ballet School; the Ecole-Atelier of Maurice Bejart; and The Juilliard School Dance Division, from which she graduated with the John Erskine Prize for Artistic and Academic Excellence. Laura’s prestigious and eclectic background has led to a unique performance career, establishing her as a leading lady of the New York dance scene and a passionate advocate for re-connection with the innate wisdom of the body.

Laura is a founding member and Principal Performer at Company XIV, a multi-media production company which seamlessly blends dance with theatre, opera, circus, burlesque and opulent design in live performance and film.

She has been instrumental in developing the company’s unique movement language, influential throughout the NYC arts world for its sensual combination of courtly elegance, emotional intelligence, and animal power. XIV has been nominated for Drama Desk Awards in 2014 and 2015 for Unique Theatrical Experience and Best Choreography respectively. In 2017, Laura featured in McCormick’s choreography for Rusalka at the Metropolitan Opera, a performance which was broadcast in HD at cinemas worldwide. She also created the title role in Jonathan Watkins’ Kes at the Sheffield Crucible, U.K.

Laura is the founder of Alchemy For Nomads, a company for the production of her solo choreography and for the creation of communal experiences that reclaim our original physical instincts. She believes that the arts are a service, not a product, and she is dedicated to making the ancient practices of dance and storytelling more available within a culture which trains us to mistrust the wisdom of our bodies from an early age. Her solo choreography is dedicated to telling the stories we wish we had heard as children (but didn’t) and to the decentralization of high-quality art-making away from urban areas. It has toured widely, from a rooftop in Capri, Italy to a re-purposed church in upstate New York to a residency in a fishing village in Sitka, Alaska. Her projects have received generous support from Acadia Projects, the Turkeyland Cove Foundation, and The Church, Mt. Vision.

Laura is a passionate educator and serves as international Visiting Artist in schools through the Juilliard Global network. She has been on faculty at Eliot Feld’s Ballet Tech, the New York Public School for Dance, since 2008. The Wild Current, a commission from Eliot Feld and the Ballet Tech Foundation, premiered at The Joyce Theatre in New York City in 2017. She has worked closely with artists of all disciplines in both a coaching and choreographic capacity at such prestigious institutions as Canadian Opera Company, The Park Avenue Armory, The Donmar Warehouse (UK), Theater For A New Audience, Broadway Dance Center, The Juilliard School (both Dance and Music Divisions) and Circus Juventas.

When Laura is not indulging her nomadic tendencies, she lives in the woods outside Rhinebeck, NY with her husband, conductor Ryan McAdams, and Sophie the cat.
