Short Corners

Look how quickly the ball is being passed to team-mates with pinpoint accuracy. Great skills in these clips.

Argentina Short Corners

This is my favorite video online at the moment. Excellent demonstrations of stick trapping, and drag flicking. Also notice the hand grip for the hits... choke hit, hands together, slightly lower on the stick, with a tight whip around the body to end the hot. Absolutely perfect example of women's hockey at it's best.

Outletting

Some great ideas for outletting.

how to perform better elimination drags around a defender

lots of good tips here about hand position, and body alignment.

optimal ball carrying position

some tips to help you be more skilled in moving the ball. Pay attention to the comments about shoulders, feet, and when to look for the elimination pass.

Building reception skills

a nice drill for developing reception and passing skills, then a shot on goal. can be done from either side.

Shooting Skills - 1

First in a series of 4 Shooting Skills videos with Trini Powell, Australia FH Olympian. She is a phenomenal player and coach, and someone whom I admire a great deal. For those of you who have played with me for a while now, you will know many of these techniques as I use them in my coaching all the time, especially for scoring and shooting training. Enjoy.

Dribbling and Elimination skills with Ryan Archibald, NZ Blacksticks

Another great skills demonstration by Phil Burrows and Ryan Archibald from NZ Blacksticks

Tackling with Mark Knowles, Australian Defender

This web clip features Mark Knowles (Australia) and Phil Burrows (New Zealand), two of the world's best defenders and Olympic field hockey players. If you do not know who these guys are, google them. This lesson is phenomenal and can be used for anyone looking to make a tackle in our defensive 1/2.

Reverse/Backhand shooting with Phil Burrows, NZ Blacksticks

Phil Burrows is one of the worlds best FH snipers in the world. Review his technical skills, practice with purpose and lots of repetition and you will be a master of the reverse shot. We both prefer to shoot off the left foot, but as I have said over the years, it does not really matter which foot you shoot off as long as you have the ball in the right place.

Jinking and popping the ball

Granted, this type of ball movement is a little easier to do on a water based turf as the ball travels more smoothly, and can be lifted and bounces more effectively. However it can still be done on a regular turf field.

Tomahawks and reverse shooting

Australia has some amazing Field Hockey coaching online materials. The Just Hockey Skill Up Series if no exception. Excellent demonstration on how to execute perfect tomahawks step by step.

Squeeze shot in high traffic area

One of my all time favouite shots to use in high traffic areas and when I need to get a shot off quickly at net. This technique allows players to use limited backswing, with maximum speed and force at the net, especially when the ball may be a little behind the player.

Slap Hitting

Slap Hitting is an essential skill in field hockey. Pay close attention to how the player uses his body, hands and wrists to redirect the ball and deceptively pass it.

Receiving the ball to make the next pass

Carrying the ball on the left, one handed

Great skill to use on the left side of the field in the attacking half to keep the defender at a distance, and curl into the circle. Can be used to dribble up field with speed also.

Eliminating the defender

Great demonstration of how to use your body to fake, and then speed into space to eliminate the defender
