Patriots Fall Just Short Against Grassfied

Posted by Justin Lee on Mar 06 2017 at 07:52PM PST

Our Patriots traveled to PAAC tonight to face the Grassfield Grizzlies with two days of rest after a season opening win on Friday night. The kids had seemed more focussed and eager to earn another win on the season. The game had started with each exchanging the first 3 goals resulting in a 2-1 lead in favor of the Grizzlies. With a little bit of trouble with ball movement, and groundballs the team was down 11-3 at halftime. The team never let up, and came out of halftime motivated with fire in their eyes. The team battled in the second half and pulled back to within 2 goals with the Grizzlies up 14-12 with just under two minutes left. Unfortunately after a close shot, the time ran out with the Grizzlies winning 14-12 resulting in our season record to be 1-1.

Together the kids cheered each other on, and proved to everyone at the game that First Colonial was a new team and is determined to leave their mark on the season this year. I personally believe that if we had another two minutes in the game, we would have been able to finish the game with another win. But the kids proved just how good they can be this season, and I can say for the entire coaching staff of Coach Unger and Coach Taylor that we have high hopes for the team as we move on from tonight.

While it is EXTREMELY hard to point out individuals from an exceptional team performance, a few players played extremely well tonight! Junior Goalie Marco Farley stood his ground in the goal and withstood the barrage of shots and amassed numerous saves to keep us in the game! Senior Defenseman Jack Stephenson shut down some of Grassfield’s top offensive players causing multiple turnovers and giving the Grassfield offense a ton of problems. Junior Attackman Blake Taylor had led the offense with 9 goals, including 1 impressive shot which left the coaches speechless. While I may be biased since it was my position, I do feel that Senior Captain and Midfielder Crew Smith was an unsung hero tonight dominating the face-off X tonight and helping the team getting multiple extra offensive possessions.

But the teams entire effort should not be overlooked as it was the entire team who had achieved this effort! We have another week of practice before our Patriots take the field on Friday against the Landstown Eagles in the Sportsplex!
